Update: PNW Season Opener -Now with PICS!

Okay,
I know that we want to have a fly in during the early part of June. And I would love to get on board. I know a lot of people made it to powers last year, and it's easy with nothing to sign etc. So maybe we should do it there or here are a couple other options....What does everyone think?

If we do it, lets choose either the 7th, or the 14th.

Re: PNW Season Opener -- Powers Fly In (6S6)??

This may seem weird, "I care where it is but, most likely won't."

Do not count my vote but... I was at Toketee State (3S6) about two months ago. And the airfield really made a good impression on me. I drove there in a 4x4 on the way home in the evening from Crystal Lake, Seemed pretty safe but, very isolated. Wanted to fly Scout there! Have not landed yet...one day for sure.

Toketee State (3S6) would/could/should be interesting. Real back country! But, looked reasonably safe to me. I'm a whimp when it comes to really dangerous undeveloped landing locations. #-o

Re: PNW Season Opener -- Powers Fly In (6S6)??

It was fun last year, a good visit and decent turnout. Make sure to contact the Port of Coquille well ahead of time to get a shitter or 2 delivered.

Powers can be fun later in the summer too because of the good swimming holes. Early to mid June it's still a little chilly.

It's a farm strip, not backcountry so don't get hung up on whether it is or isn't. It's just a good spot to accommodate some planes and organize for fly-outs to Agness or the coast. The town is unimpressive but you can buy ice, beer, ice cream etc.

Toketee is awesome I have camped there multiple times. Its sweet because the camping is a mile away from the gated access road, so you probably won't see another sole unless there are some FS guys doing some work back there. They were testing out some new ways to burn slash piles there back in 2012. I've had to scare turkey off the runway before and have seen lots of elk there! Short flight to Prospect where its a .4 mi walk to town and MoGas.

Not surprised you guys out there really like the area! Definitely top ten from my limited prospective.

Thank you for the PIREP!

The Rogue River gorge is up that way too, which is awesome. The flight into Propect gives you a pretty good view. Not sure what the access by foot is like.

Mill Creek Falls and the river are 500' from the threshold to 02, and Prospect State Park borders the west side of the runway, to get to the store/gas you would walk through the state park 8)

I still voted for Lands Inn, but I just hope I can make it to where ever when ever we decide!

I am open to all of the above!

Being based at Grants Pass I can easily accommodate BCPers wishing to take a shower, groceries, stay the night, etc. Our house is about 1m from the airport.

All the best!

I'd like to go but won't be able to make June 7 or 14. I'll keep watching this thread for updates.

Re: PNW Season Opener -- Powers Fly In (6S6)??

I'm thinking that since we can't always count on the Wx in May or even June, we might just assign a different location to three or four weekends in a row and hope that one or two work out.

John I am good with Lucas 13-15 and the jet boat ride. The stretch from Lucas upstream is suppose to be the best. I have not done that.

Cheers...Rob

It looks like a split group. We have 8 people and 5 planes going to Lucas Lodge June 13-15.

Some may choose to do Powers June 7th. I was one who voted for Powers because Lucas wasn't on the list.

Then LittleJohn said Lucas June 13-15 with a mail boat ride. That was all I needed to hear to change my mind.

Re: PNW Season Opener -- Powers Fly In (6S6)??

the girls are looking forward to mail boat ride and staying in a room with some one else cooking fried chicken and mashed tators and gravy. should be fun. I think some of the guys from cottage grove may possabley come over to. If they decide to have something at powers on a differant date we can always come back, camp out.

Re: PNW Season Opener -- Powers Fly In (6S6)??

Another option for those wanting to get an earlier start is Nehalem Bay over Memorial weekend.
This has been an annual for us, never really know what the weather will be till you get there. We have large tarps if needed and the wood supply is endless.
Usually 5 - 6 airplanes, room for more though.
Cheers

Or if you want an earlier start come to Pacific City April 12-13. Usually just 1 airplane but room for more. The wx is going to be great!!!! Sunday forecast is 68° Blue tarps are good but we opted for a house.
