Where did you fly today?

Did you fly somewhere cool, take photos, and feel like telling the tale to make us drool from the confines of our offices? Post them up!

SPB - WA01 - 18JY - SPB

A few weeks back I took myself and a friend I am trying to hook on flying for a little trip out to SW Washington. Left Scappoose in the rental pacer and headed towards my hometown of Naselle, WA.

First stop was WA01 (Wirkkala Field 3000 x 40 grass), a private field in Naselle. Naselle is my hometown and grew up playing little league watching the planes fly over so after hearing the place was gonna close after 48 years had to make one last trip. The owner is 89 and has kept the airstrip open even though he hasn't flown in 20 years, mainly just in case of emergency or for folks who call him up and want to land. So after 48 years it is likely to become houses........

Next stop was the airport with the longest name in the world, or in SW Washington at least. 18JY (Skamokawa East Valley Airport 2200 x 100 grass). Stopped and chatted with the owner; who is friendly and open to pilots stopping in if they call first. Not a lot to do in Skamokawa unless you live nearby like me, but if your are looking to bag another airport or want to meet some friend for some steelhead fishing on the Columbia its not too bad. Then back to Scapoose as the ceiling was coming down a little fast for my comfort.

Last plane into WA01

Re: Where did you fly today?

patrol guy: I'm not sure what type of tire that is, but it does look like it came off a snapper push mower!! Seriously I am curious now so I will check.

onthegas: Believe it or not you can! I did my private in that airplane at SPB and my instructor rents to his former students and folks he did tailwheel endorsements with. He does make you carry your own insurance though......... Its a fun little airplane!!

Re: Where did you fly today?

Just out of curiosity, what kind of rental rate do you pay on that Pacer? For reference, the two 172's here rent for just under & just over $100/hour wet.
It's sure great to see that a tailwheel airplane is available for rent somewhere, even if the customer base has to be "pre-qualified" - for which I don't blame the owner one bit. Seems like I heard Starks Twin Oaks airport (or one of the other airports south of Hillsboro) also has some t/w rentals available. A cople airports near here do t/w training in Champs but I'm not sure if the airplanes are available for solo rental for anything oher than pattern work.

Troutdale to Madras. Was suppose to have a new vacuum pump installed. The shop ordered the wrong one. Nice day to fly around the neighborhood anyway.

Re: Where did you fly today?

Inkom Idaho to the Alaskan Bushwheel factory in Joseph Oregon (beautifull place) where I picked up a pair of lightweight 26"ers for my S7-S, then Grangeville, St. Maries, Kellog, and then spent the night at West Fork. This AM up and over Lost Trail, then bush hopped from May to Howe, with a quick stop at Summit Creek, then across the desert and back into the mountains to my place. 12.1 hrs TT from Wed AM to Thurs AM. Best of all I saved UPS charges!!!

The current rate is around $110/hr wet. The price moves up and down with whatever Scappoose is charging for fuel. Not too bad, considering when I rent the 172 from Kelso, they charge $96/hr. With WA sale tax the 172 and the pacer work out to be about the same, so I guess the pacer is not the cheapest plane to rent, but its sure more fun then the 172. ( and still cheaper then renting at some of the towered airports around the portland area)

Just for fun, what do those "lightweight 26"ers" weigh? For reference, not counting inner tubes,a pair of airtrac 800x6's (4 ply) weigh about 20#, and a pair of airtrac 850x6's (6 ply) weigh about 33# . Anybody know what a set of 26" Goodyears weighs?

Re: Where did you fly today?

Flew from SNY to the ranch in southwestern SD, then to CDR for pancakes, then to AIA for a fuel stop and showed my Idaho LDG at Big Creek to a friend, and back to SNY for some free hot dogs at the city sidewalk sale. Very smooth going north but a little bumpy coming back to SNY.
