Where did you fly today?

Did you fly somewhere cool, take photos, and feel like telling the tale to make us drool from the confines of our offices? Post them up!

Re: Where did you fly today?

Flew from Fullerton, CA to 29 Palms area, up to Amboy. Landed for a few minutes (photo ops./pit stop) then north for Kelso Dunes, then landed at Bacon Strip Ranch (http://www.baconstripranch.com/Airstrip.htm) where I met up with Glidergeek. Then flew down to Big Bear (L35) for lunch, then back to Fullerton.

What a classic photo Pat!! That picture could be black and white and taken in the late 50's.

I thought of Roy's while watching "Hoffa" where Jack Nicholson gets waxed in the cafe and stuffed into the moving truck at the end of the show. I've never landed there...how is it??

Took a little breakfast run Sunday morning with my friend Tim. It was 6 degrees outside. The first photo is outside my hangar getting ready to go.

The second is passing Mt. Pocono Airport. You can see it between the wing struts near the top.

No pictures today but managed to sneak in an after work flight. Went to Bijou Bottom and Kelly Airpark. Incredible Colorado weather once again. Out of the past 3 weeks I have only been grounded once due to weather.

The airstrip was in great shape! It's a private gravel strip that they drag on a regular basis, and your more than welcomed by Sheriff Hastings to drop on in. I met him the day I flew in and he was a very nice gentleman. If you do drop in, you can park next to the Roy's sign for a photo op. Sheriff Hastings said I wasn't the first to do so, and won't be the last. Make sure you stop in and say hello so they don't think anything suspicious of you. Apparently the strip is used by unscrupulous people once in a great while. Now that I think about it, I didn't notice how long the gas pump hoses were. Would be a good stop for Mogas. But I think there's ethanol in the fuel.

Glidergeek put a windsock up on the run down hangar that's on the southeast end of the strip (near the buildings). I plan to go back out there before I leave CA. I'll take the time to get more info and pictures of the strip and if the owners don't mind, I'll post the info on http://www.shortfield.com. I'm sure they don't mind, because they would be happy to get all the business they can. As of today (1-11-10), the is no food available at the cafe (just snacks, drinks, and gas).

Here's the website for Roy's in Amboy. If you plan to stop by there, give them a call to get the latest condition on the strip and hours. The best time to call is in the morning.

http://www.rt66roys.com/ Click on "Pictures", scroll down and there will be pictures of the airstrip.

One more note and I'm done (I promise). Amboy Crater is really neat to see from the air! Just be careful of the restricted airspace to the west of the Crater. I stayed to the east side of the crater and on my 396 I can see I was hugging the very edge of the restricted airspace. Oh, the salt ponds on Bristol Dry Lake was cool to see, too.

Swaggers up...adjusting pants: "I got a report of some airplanes landing at this airport...."

What the hell has the public's image of GA become, when people call the sheriff because a lot of small planes are flying over town? 50 years ago the townspeople would be getting in their cars headed to the airport to watch.

WTF is right!! That's too bad them town folk got all razzled up about 15-20 planes coming down to spend some money in there small little town for breakfast.

Looking at that airport on the map, it's surrounded by Restricted and MOA airspace. Hard to believe drug runners and illegals would use that area/airports for illegal activities :? But then again, them type of people are pretty ballsy!! Especially along the border.

On another note, sounds and liked a good time! Wonder if they all flew down there all at once in a formation??

most people I know don't even know that there is a GA airport near by let alone go and drive to it.

We did fly in all at once but not in formation. Looking at map to get through R-2305 (it's an A-10 bombing range) you contact the Gila Bend AF tower then they clear you to follow the road south and 500ft AGL to P01. In R2305 you contact Snake Eye and they track you down. It was pretty intense on that freq they were spoting a target aka a truck off road full of people. It's a fun flight.

It's a screen capture. If you want to capture a pic of what's on your screen at the time, just hit "Print Screen". It's one of the buttons at the top right of a standard keyboard.

Well, it wasn’t backcountry but how often to you get to go inside a B-29? Took the family to Pueblo for lunch, met a friend and we all went to the museum. If you haven’t been there, it's well worth the trip. It’s 1 block South of Flower.

Re: Where did you fly today?

I was great seeing HC and BM again! Nice day of flying and I guess I should stayed a bit longer (Bill has all the fun). Thanks for the heater element too HC.

The pics are on Katie's camera, I should have a few to post up. It was fun flying formation up with Jim in lead.
Fun times.

Re: Where did you fly today?

Man, what an incredible day!!! First off, thanks Matt for inviting us to your company fly in. Ernie, thanks for the awesome hospitality, again! Quadruple thanks for hooking everyone up with the PT-19 rides. Ed is a very kind guy to give all 4 of us a ride. I'm just sorry Matt and Katie had to get back early. I know Katie would have been grinning ear to ear. The grass runway at Sidney is awesome too. Even had a little fun on the flight back to Colorado.
