Where did you fly today?

Did you fly somewhere cool, take photos, and feel like telling the tale to make us drool from the confines of our offices? Post them up!

Re: Where did you fly today?

I had a lot of fun flying the pattern at Rio Vista today practicing my shortfield takeoffs and landings. I kept working it shorter and shorter. With 12kts of wind I was getting it down, dumping the flaps immediatley, braking to a stop, going full power and accelerating with zero flaps, then yank in 40 degrees all at once. I was getting back off the ground from the stop-n-go in 400ft from the beginning of the runway, or just before the end of the first centerline. Not bad for a stock engined 170 eh? All this with full fuel too! Next time I'll have to get some video. This was my first time trying this technique on take off. All you Cessna guys with johnson bars go try it, you"ll be impressed at how short you can get it off the ground. Just be sure to start milking those flaps back off once you leave the ground and accelerate into your climb.

Re: Where did you fly today?

Used to do that with a Cherokee when heavy and / or I didn't like the ground surface. It tended to startle the passenger. I flew it in ground effect until building speed to milk up the flaps. It took a longer distance but I was off the ground very short. I also did it with the Citabria. I only used two notches because it seemed to be too much drag with all down. I should have experimented with that more than I did.
You make that 170 perform !

I've been to Nebraska three times and every time I saw it, it was green. I never knew it had a brown color phase. Wow, you learn something knew every day!

Flew a Lake Amphibian. I am in love with this airplane. I know there are a lot of naysayers about the merits of the Lakes, but I would own one.

Dirtstrip has asked that I film a little more of New England to help him pass those short South Dakota winter days ! We've had warm weather, including 4 straight days of record temperatures--averaging about 40 degrees F above normal--flew to Hampton NH grass field for lunch and a bike ride on the Atlantic shore. Here's a 2 min video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ge-ITri1L1o

Re: Where did you fly today?

Bob Hawkins (BCP.RLHawk), Tommy Thomason (AZ Pilots Assn) and I flew into a remote USFS airstrip in SE Arizona on 3/24/12. Dale Jensen (BCP.Lizard) and Mark Spencer (The RAF) joined us for a great day. We did a little work and a lot of playing. Met one of the two ranchers in the area and gave rides in the 205 and Super Cub.

Density altitude was 8200' mid day.

Here is a link to the days activities:

Re: Where did you fly today?

I got the oil in the 182 changed yesterday and flew the Mrs. and some friends out to Friday Harbor for dinner. It was so beautiful in Western Washington. When it is nice here it is REALLY nice, but you just have to put up with the other 300 crappy days. :?

Columbia between Wells Dam and Chelan Falls, just down the hill from Lake Chelan. We fly out of S10. We usually play on the lake instead of the river, but tourists are in town and he had gotten notified of a 911 call about an airplane crashing in the lake earlier that day. It is a small county and 911 dispatch asks if it is a blue and white plane with the prop on the roof. If they answer yes, they tell the caller everything is ok. It helps that he has given every fireman and half the county cops rides.

Re: Where did you fly today?

Off the N end of Nimpo Lake, W a bit to Charlotte Lake, down the little Atnarko River to Lonesome Lake (of Ralph & John Edwards fame), circled to see the Hunlen icicle (Hunlen falls is 1000' straight down & freezes) then down Turner lake & saw lots of moose tracks but no critters, out to the Bella Coola drainage, up the hiway 20 hill, over the rainbow mtns (no colors in winter :( ) buzzed a couple rancher neighbors, saw 8 meese & a small wolf pack, past Anahim airport, back home & greased 'er on & fueled up just before the wind picked up & just in time for lunch!
Then had to help neighbors all afternoon until HappyHour.

Re: Where did you fly today?

My co-pilot and I went out for a ride today to look for some landable places along the river.
Image

Only found one place that was almost long enough. Now isn't the time to be looking because the river is on its way up. If I was a half decent pilot there would be a couple more potential spots.
