Where did you fly today?

Did you fly somewhere cool, take photos, and feel like telling the tale to make us drool from the confines of our offices? Post them up!

Re: Where did you fly today?

I don't think there are fish - at least nothing large, lake is at 5,500' and water was 7C/44F. In a normal year it would be still frozen. Lakes around here that are usually icebound until August are open now. And with no snow melt record low river levels will be hard on salmon runs. Will send photo.

Pretty much all of BC was really well photoshopped during manufacture.

Re: Where did you fly today?

I got in 14 minutes of dead stick ridge soaring last night. Not quite wind enough to maintain much less gain, but once shut down at 9200', hugging the ridge and working what lift was left, it took a while before I did a restart over the valley, some 4 K lower. The first time DS with the Prince Prop (less or more drag then the 3 blade smaller dia. Kiev, beats me...) and the first with the GRT Mini. The digital vsi makes a pretty good poor mans vario.

Image

This ridge is oriented at a 90 to the late afternoon sun, as a result it keeps pumping out lift until late in the day thermal wise, and those thermals seem to suck air up from the valley so good ridge lift too. On a mild day like yesterday, you need to tuck it in tight, tighter then in this pic but this was as close as I got while fooling with the camera. This near vert rock face is at about 1:00 in the pic below.

Image

I immediately figured all this out the first time I laid eyes on it about 40 years ago as a passing through the area hang glider vagabond/flying bum, except now I'm stuck here. This picture shows why, 5 K from the highest point to the valley floor. =D> Image After powering back up I flew the few miles into another, but much smaller, ridge in town, where I worked that for a while at about 14 to 1600 RPM at the prop. Then onto several ongoing construction sites where I'm providing the contractors with aerial pics, (and getting preferential treatment when sub contractors ask what crane service to use, the new CAT equipment facility has been great in this regard, a win/win for all involved), 1.5 hrs total on 2.5 gallons of regular mogas. 1.67 GPH, less actually because that was the Hobbs meter reading, throw in the 14 minutes DS and it's 1.47 GPH.

On the way back from JC..... note the difference between seen at a distance (smooth as a baby butt) and closeup (not so smooth). Like a noted Super Cub pundit once said : "If it looks smooth, it might be", or words to that effect.

Re: Where did you fly today?

Okay, this was a couple days ago, but some of you will recognize this from the movie, "Always"... The fire bomber base in the movie was filmed at Libby, Montana. Neat little paved strip just south of the Kootenai River valley.

Re: Where did you fly today?

Yeah, cool photo. We just watched that movie at our "Airport Movie Night" two nights ago. They do it (at least) once a month, all summer long at Tailspin Tommys on Jefferson County Airport near Pt Townsend WA. Everybody's welcome, come on down if you live in or are passing through the Puget Sound area. Next one's probably gonna be toward the end of next month, they usually post a flyer in the Spruce Goose Café a week or so beforehand.
