Where did you fly today?

Did you fly somewhere cool, take photos, and feel like telling the tale to make us drool from the confines of our offices? Post them up!

So good to see it out and about in action cam! You must be having a blast! How does it fly?

Now to get some big tyres for it!

+1 to both. Although, it's hard to justify the larger tires down here. Fair grass strips is the roughest condition you'll see. I need to make a day trip up to check it out.

Re: Where did you fly today?

It flies great! It's hard to slow down, but it flies really well slow. Stalls around 45 mph indicated (I haven't done a GPS square to see what that actually is yet) and cruises in the 130-140 mph range.

I've got some 26" Goodyears for it, I just haven't put them on yet.

I'd love to see you, Brett! I'd it's a weekend we're not traveling, we might could meet you somewhere in the middle for lunch.

Re: Where did you fly today?

What prop you running on the Racer? And is that gear an approved (337 or field appr) mod, or is the airplane an experimental (AB or exhibition)?

AK_Logan,
Those Pics are awesome! You should send the top one to Airframes and have them hang it on the wall for advertisement for the Bush Wheels. Thanks for sharing, that was the motivation I needed to get through my day. Makes me miss Alaska though!

That's a lotta prop, and explains the 130-140mph cruise. How's it do for takeoff?
I had a 74x54 on my C150/150TD and liked it for takeoff & climb, although I gave up a little cruise.
The standard prop for the 150hp STC was a 74x58 pitch, I borrowed one from a friend & it hurt my takeoff quite a bit.
What year was your racer registered as an E-AB? A friend of mine is (finally) nearing the end of his multi-year Pacer rebuild-- he wanted to do it as an experimental but after talking to several FAA types he decided it wasn't going to happen, at least not an an AB. And there's too many restrictions on an exp- exhibition.

Yeah, it's a lot of prop. I haven't tried measuring take off performance yet since I'm still working on my technique, but it gets off pretty quick, nothing that'd surprise anyone here though. I'd love to see how she'd do with a cs prop :)

2005. It was a complete rebuild with a lot of fabrication so I think that helped the case for E-AB.

Re: Where did you fly today?

Camped out at 8700', to put those mountains across the valley in perspective! My hoped for camp site, with a fire ring and trees for shelter/tiedowns, was occupied by a pickup but no tent (surprising, this is NOT a heavily used area, it turns out he was sleeping in his truck thus no tent set up) so I went ahead and landed and the first thing the guy said was "Man, I never even heard you, I saw you first", and the second thing was "I've never seen anything like that before."

I got a look at his license plate, and seeing he was from my area (about 100 miles away), I asked him where he was from. As expected, Pocatello, I then told him I was from SLC Utah, and 3 of my buddies were flying in in the next few minutes, and we really had hoped to camp at this site, so I was going to have to ask him to move. After less then 2 seconds, (he was armed after all), I let him know I was, A: from Inkom, not SLC, (the little burg south of the "big city" of Pocatello), and B: KIDDING. Yeah it pretty much blew his mind.... a great guy it turns out and he even mentioned there was plenty of room left over if I want to park it there that night. I told him "hell you didn't drive way up here in the middle of nowhere to have som yahoo fly in and park right next to ya, first come first serve, I'll just drop in over there," and I pointed at another section of ridge about 1/2 mile away. We shook hands and laughed again, and I did so. Unbelievable calm that night, I was pretty exposed and though tied down well was a little apprehensive but absolutely dead calm all night =D>

Note the scattered small rocks, of no import with the 29", I could never go back to small tires!

Great job Fiddler! Those are the kinds of stories that GA needs more of. I'm glad the local news reported on it.

I bet it felt really good to help all those people. I love when flying has a mission beyond just burning holes in the sky. (I do love burning holes in the sky too)

That's the hwy 58 that runs between Tehachapi & Mojave (and on eastwards)? The linked story is a bit sparse on details, whereabouts was the slide?

Re: Where did you fly today?

Quality leaves something to be desired with the video/pics. All pics and video were taken from my iphone and made on the iPhone iMovie app.

The shots were taken at my new home away from home, near the southern end of the Poconos in PA. Beautiful area for sure. I cant wait to do some more exploring. Just got the plane up here Sunday.
