Had kind of a funny flight today. The plan was for my daughter and I to pack our bikes in the back of the plane and fly to McKenzie Bridge and do some mountain biking on the nice trails there.
Well, by the time bikes got pumped, everyone had their snacks, etc. it started getting later than I'd planned. By the time we got to McKenzie Bridge, which is about a 1 hour flight, the wind out of the west had picked up quite a bit, and the sock was pretty stiff with a direct tailwind for landing.
I'm a pretty cautious guy, especially when I have my kids with me, so I pretty quickly decided it wasn't worth it. To make it up to my daughter I decided to fly over to Toketee state instead. I figured we could still ride our bikes around there.
I've been into Toketee a few times, and I'm well aware of the herd of Elk that hang around there, but I guess I've always been lucky in the past. I circled a few times, and didn't see any elk. Rolling out on final, still no elk. When I was about 50 feet above the ground, here they come. About 20 big guys sauntered out onto the strip at once. They didn't seem a bit deterred by our presence. In fact, they looked like they were protecting their territory.
We went around, and circled a few more times, but they weren't budging. I just had to laugh. By now, my daughter was starting to feel air sick. We headed back home, and she rode her bike around the airport while I got the plane put away in the hangar. Not too bad, after all.
BTW, I was sad to see that they've done quite a bit of logging around the McKenzie Bridge strip. I don't know if it was to widen the space for the fire choppers or what, but it looks pretty ugly compared to last year.
