I had a "too big to fly it" solar panel to deliver to a customer in the Jackson Hole area yesterday, on very short notice. This 300 watt panel was almost too big to fit in the little Toyota SUV, but pulling the front pass.seat (back seats long gone, I use this rig like a little panel truck) solved that. Turns out the ranch I delivered it to is next door to Harrison Ford's spread, in a real genteel section of "rural" Jackson. Real subtle big ass homes, hidden back aways from the road, not in your face new money places, but older BIG money places that don't flaunt it. My gas for delivery was paid, and it was yet another day of high winds and heavy rain, so perfect for NOT flying, got the rig real clean also (rural Idaho car wash).
Once delivered, on a whim I blew off the rest of the day and drove north along the Grand Teton National Park (couldn't see shit in the WX, but I know what they look like, seen them before) and then made the big loop through Yellowstone, exiting at the West entrance. A careful review of the Park info first, informed me, and who would have guessed, that it is NOT OK to pet, attempt to ride, or otherwise get too close to the wildlife. I've flown this route about every year, even in the winter on skis, but first time in years driving it. So I was getting that enhanced sense of awareness (or maybe it was too much coffee) that happens when you drive through a place you know from the air. Very light traffic, and almost continual rain, with the dog with his head out the window the entire time, it was oddly great fun. Terrible flying WX was the icing on the cake, it was fun imagining how I would fly the route (park altitude restrictions aside) that day, it would have been terrifying mostly, it made me really appreciate the 4 wheeler! But damn those trees are big and tall, and lots of them, but I did notice almost all of the road was powerline free, so if I ever have to choose due to a engine problem, I know where I'm heading. 515 miles, 3 qts. of coffee, and 30 + mpg overall. The rig is squeaky clean also. I want an airplane with the interior volume of the little Toyota, along with the big rear door, but it needs to burn less then 4 gph and handle my strip, maybe a mini Flying Boxcar type design (seriously).
