(Yet Another) Cessna 170 project

Hi all,

I finally figured out how to post photos here  so I thought I'd start my own refurb thread.

She's a 1952 Cessna 170 barn find that only has 1,400 hours total time and has sat bathed in ACF50 in a hangar for the last 30 years.
With motor and wheel pants already sold and nothing usable on the interior, we have a great canvas to work with.

The Goals in not particular order:
* Continental IO-360
* Cessna 175 wings with Sportsman STOL
* 180 Gear legs
* Baggage door
* New roof, boot cowl, belly skin, firewall...

Outside, she will look stock. Bright bare metal with Navy blue stripes.
Inside will be more modern but I'm still keeping the floating panel and piano keys (gotta love the piano keys)
Here's a few of the progress so far

As found over a year ago. Could have almost got a ferry permit to fly her home but I'm not that brave.
Image

Making a big project and turning it into a bunch of little projects
Image

Taking bits back home for a winter project...maybe two winters.
Image

Gonna have to fix that
Image

Learning a lot about buffing
Image

You just KNOW that flap tunnel carpet has a gallon of glue under it :(
Nothing that a gallon of MEK can't fix.
Image

Painting the bottoms and all parts I dont want to polish a nice gull gray.
Image
Image

That's just pretty
Image

Gonna need a new roof
Image

Hey look! A new roof!

And boot cowl

Interior Progress

And thats about it so far. I feel pretty good since I really just got started Thanksgiving 2016. Not bad for 2 months of evenings and weekends.

Wow! Nice work! Did the MEK work? The new metal - did you make your own or purchase and install?? Please keep posting progress.

I mixed MEK and mineral spirits 1:1 in a spray bottle. It worked VERY well. I must have gone thru a dozen canisters on the mask tho.

I bought a bunch of .032 2024T3 sheet and cut the roof and boot cowl vs buying. With a good set of shears, it wasn't that bad of a job.

The panel will be stock looking with a Garmin G5 and EI CGR-30 but otherwise kind of stock to include the glove box.

Not sure yet on the interior but light gray and Navy blue.
We liked this in our last plane but the light tan made it a little too rich for a 170. It belonged in a Mooney.

Re: (Yet Another) Cessna 170 project

The phycological boost to the project was incredible. I was feeling overwhelmed by all the open tickets of things to do and every time I walked in the garage, there was this piled of ugly parts.
I'm far from it but, seeing all these parts looking pretty makes me feel like I'm over the hump.
Now I have to remember how all this shit goes back in

I know how you feel! I recognize all those parts from my own project. Looks like you took apart a few more things than I did though! The parts manual helps a lot for putting stuff together, and also for ordering new hardware.

Re: (Yet Another) Cessna 170 project

Looks great! Are the pedals painted/powdercoated or just media blasted?

Re: (Yet Another) Cessna 170 project

The rudder pedals are not what I wanted them to be.
I hate when they have paint half rubbed off so I asked them to just strip them bare.
What they did was bead blast them which will really look cruddy the first time I use them.

Trying to figure out how to fix that. I might just buff them enough on a wheel so they look ok bare but not try to polish all the texture off (which would be a month of Sundays).

I've always wanted to try Line-X on rudder pedals, that polyurea stuff is awesome.

We've coated a few floatplane steps with and it's holding up beautifully, and that's with pax loading and unloading all day long.

That's a great idea for the pedals! I just sent an email to the local dealer to see if they'd do it.

Re: (Yet Another) Cessna 170 project

I used spray can truck bed liner from rustoleum on my old 170s rudder pedals. They turned out good and the grippy surface was better than smooth paint, they did start to wear after a while.
