Your Foreflight Wish List

I’m meeting next week with a member of the Foreflight Team to talk about how they can better support “the coolest segment of aviation” (their words - okay I planted the seed).

Please give me a list of the features you wish Foreflight had to better serve the type of flying we do. Be specific.

Thanks

* "Sliding time" widget for path traveled. Including Weather, Airspace, TFRs etc.. Like Garmin Pilot.

Re: Your Foreflight Wish List

It would be nice to have airports show on aerial, terrain, world, and street map views. Also maybe an airspace layover that can be turned on or off when in those views.

Also, a vertical speed to target that you can set the rate of decent that you want, altitude above and distance from target you want to get to, and have it show a glide slope on the HSI. My 496 can already do this but it would be a nice add on to Foreflight

Foreflight has a Track Log feature, and when done you can upload it to Foreflight.com. Are you wanting something different?

I'm aware of this but have never used it. Do you use it for flight planning? During the flight? How do you use it?

Thanks

Re: Your Foreflight Wish List

I love Foreflight and use it at work as well as my personal flying. Here are my thoughts.

I sent this a few weeks ago but it would be good for them to hear it again.

- Currently taxi diagrams come up only in north up orientation. It would be better and less confusing if they were in the same orientation as the chart was in, for example, track up.

I've not sent this one but I think their Nav Log needs to be delineated with a bold or colored line between leg and total numbers. I always have to take a second to make sure I'm looking where I need to be to get the info I want. It's not intuitive to me.

They have great weather products but it's easy to forget which charts tell you what. A quick reminder would be nice, similar to what they used on their video introducing the new weather products.

They have added the Zulu time to the weather chart pages. Might be good to put the Zulu date too.

How about some descent planning. Granted it would be off of GPS derived altitude, but I'd love to be able to tell it I want to be at this altitude by this point at this descent rate and have it signal audibly and on screen that it's time to descend. Seems this should be fairly easy.

Along with this, how about a banana bar that shows where we will reach a selected altitude based on the descent rate it's sensing. Again, GPS derived but would be close enough and could be useful.

During preflight planning I've sometimes wanted to see what's within X hours of flying or XX number of miles from a certain spot. Similar to the range rings, it would be nice to be able to long press on a spot or some other gesture and draw a ring based on time or distance. I know there is the ruler, but I want to be able to draw the circle and then zoom in and explore without having to remeasure to see if I left the defined limit.

When selecting a STAR or SID, I'd like the transition preview to be optional. That might be great for some while planning but if you know the transition you want and where it goes, I don't need to be waiting for the iPad to load that screen. Make that optional so I can have it perform like it used to prior to that change. It sometimes can really big the iPad down.

I wish their payment system would allow adding features at a prorated charge when in mid subscription rather than having to renew the whole subscription.

I wish their pro version included everything like it did before, namely Synthetic Vision.

I wish the ETA/ETE in the bottom bar was in a 0:00 format and not 0h00m.

A pet peeve of mine is whenever you long press on an airport and click details, the box resizes and gets longer. If you're too fast with your finger, you end up missing the tab you were trying to hit.

For user defined waypoints, you are allowed to store notes on them but only can view them from within the More> User Waypoints tab by hitting the info circle. It would be nice to be able to access the notes from the map page. Maybe long press, select more, then have a notes tab similar to the details tab when doing the same for airports. This would be useful for our off airport places we land where we have made notes about length, obstructions, etc.

Lastly, in a long flight plan while on the edit page, if you want to hold and move one further up into the flight plan, the other waypoints won't scroll down as you are holding the waypoint and trying to move it up. As a result, you can only move it up three lines on the edit screen.

Thanks for giving us a chance to add our .02!

Re: Your Foreflight Wish List

Okay grass trip you lost me with the "banana bar". What is that?

Really like the idea of comments come up on a waypoint on the map.

Re: Your Foreflight Wish List

I'd love to see a profile view of the weather/winds aloft and not just the terrain. Something similar to this: Image I input my waypoints, takeoff time, ETE, and in one look I can see ceilings, winds, icing, turbulence, etc. The best cross country weather planning tool I've used.

Note to self: I'd like user waypoints to appear on the map at an appropriate zoom-in level.

Yeah that too!

A banana bar is something several jets I've flown have. I think Dynon Skyview has it too. Basically as you descend to a preselected altitude, a small arc comes up along your flight path that shows where, based on your current vertical speed, you will reach that altitude. So, if you like to be leveled at 1,000' AGL (you'd enter the corresponding MSL altitude as your selected altitude) 5 miles from your airport to give you time to slow down, you can either increase or decrease the rate of descent to park that bar at roughly 5 miles out. This is used in lieu of, or in conjunction with a planned descent as Rob and I asked about above. It was largely used in past aircraft to make sure we'd meet crossing restrictions, but I've had times I wished I had it here for descent planning/management in my GA plane as well.

Re: Your Foreflight Wish List

I'd like an "in flight" UI mode where more deliberate long presses (or maybe the new force touch) are required to make selections. I don't have my iPad mounted in the plane, and it's too easy to touch a button or something unintentionally when just handling the iPad in the air.

I am new to Foreflight. I have only done a few cross countries with it. I am still experimenting and learning. I will look for the Track Log feature you mention. But does it come with the basic level?

Re: Your Foreflight Wish List

I asked fore flight to give us the ability to plot a point and draw a circle around it and shade the circle, for no fly zones because of forest fires or ex girlfriends neighborhoods.

+1

My (multiple) $150 Nexus tablet(s) trump any iPad I have ever owned and is all I fly with. (Garmin Pilot, GDL39, etc -- all because of Android support)

Re: Your Foreflight Wish List

My top wishes...

1. Make it smaller. It requires a huge amount of memory and I don't like having to buy an iPad with the most memory for one app.

2. Provide the ability to invert the colors from within the Forflight. The iPad's built-in ability to do this turns the borders that are already black to white defeating the purpose.

3. Provide a choice for FAA or Jepp charts.

4. Rework the nav log tab on the map screen to provide more contrast for the boarders between totals, leg, and remaining fields. It is hard to tell what is what unless you lean close.

5. Do NOT change the green pointer on the distance rings, the ability to measure between two points, and the pack feature. I use those on every flight.
