A nice 67 H model came up on TAP with a straight and clean airframe and a mid time engine for less than most 50s models were going for.
I read everything that I could find on the internet about the different 180 models, and decided that these planes deliver on a sweet spot for payload, range, panel real estate (for IFR goodies) and cabin volume. The mid sixties models are typically about 75-100 pounds heavier than the 50s models, but the GW is 250 pounds more than the early ships. They share most structural airframe components with the 185, so for that extra weight, you get considerably more strength. This is nice for peace of mind if things get a little rowdy in the air or on the ground.
They are all great planes, but if I were shopping for early models without good results, I wouldn't hesitate to jump on a nice H model that presented itself.

Worked on it a bunch there getting it squared away and adding some goodies: Dessers, hanging an MT, and getting her back in annual, then ferrying her back east last week. Of all the birds I have looked at, this is the cleanest 180 I have seen. (and an "H" to boot!) Bone bone stock bought from a 40 year owner. Really a unicorn find.
Just weighed it the other day and she came in at 1656. For reference, the stock 170B I bought this spring weighed 1410lbs. In contrast, my 180H (with all the mods and before the big motor and latest mods) weighs just over 1800. It's VFR with the short legs, but this is a really light bird! And fast too! 165mph indicated all day long.
170Bs are great for sure, but no way can it touch what you get in a H model 180. LOL
