Where did you fly today?

Did you fly somewhere cool, take photos, and feel like telling the tale to make us drool from the confines of our offices? Post them up!

In a few of the shots your airspeed was jumping around a little. Was it bumpy out?

It was a bit bumpy but still a pleasant flight. It is often a little turbulent in the higher canyons.

And the grass at mack is good to go. I spent a good hour shooting cross wind landings trying to shake off some of the cobwebs from not flying very much the past 2 months.

Re: Where did you fly today?

Today was one of those near perfect days.
We don't get many days when you can play near the clouds without getting tossed around.
Clear cold air unlimited visibility and not another soul around.
At least for a couple of hours, ....all was right with the world.

And the remix.

Re: Where did you fly today?

On Saturday I got off the ground for the first time in 2 months. Bad weather and a grass strip that has been over saturated with melting snow and rain had kept me on the ground for far too long. We didn't go anywhere exciting, we just left the earth for a while and got the oil circulating in the engine. My flyhound came along for the adventure. She really likes the observer doors!

Just a little local flight, but the first real off airport landing I've done. I've made tracks on lakes before on skis, but never shut down and got out.

Re: Where did you fly today?

Today was one of those magical days, cool crisp air with slight tailwind. Flew home for the first time in a couple months. Air was so nice it was amazing, days like this I feel incredibly grateful to fly like this and be so free. Pictures could never do the experience justice, but here's one of my favorite pit stops just before the mountains that I like to stop at.

Part 2 of my GoPro 3 / Drift HD 170 comparison.
Raw footage shot at 1080 / 30fps. No filters or editing.
I just noticed that for the exact footage and duration the GoPro uses nearly 3 times the memory.
That may explain some of the poor battery life.
Some of the footage is redundant but I was looking for a variety of colors and backgrounds. A little hard to do in winter.

Yeah the battery on my Hero 3 along with the additional battery pack, still doesn't even last as long as the single battery on my Hero 2. It's really annoying, but you can definitely see the higher quality picture of the Hero 3. Maybe should try recording on a lower setting and see if the battery last longer. I swear the first bar on the main battery status, is gone within 5 minutes. Is yours this bad?

Hmm. My take, at face value while reading this, is that the Drift is just compressing the frames more. Is this apples to apples? Same codec? Same compression/quality level? Compressing less (higher quality) would use less CPU and therefore less current, but the difference is going to be minuscule because the cameras compress no matter what.

More storage could mean more current used by the CMOS sensor too though.

My theory on the battery life is the wireless radio. When turned off it greatly extends the battery life of the Hero3.

Re: Where did you fly today?

The wireless remote certainly is the main culprit. But I would imagine that the storage of all that data has something to do with the problem. Even When I use it without the remote it is only good for a few hours at best. The Drift is good for up to 4 hours even with the remote. To be fair, the drift remote is a one way device and does not mirror any information from the camera. (The newer ones do have a record indicator on the remote). As far as the quality levels, well the video is raw footage from both cameras. Other than color balance, I can't really see much difference in clarity. But I would be interested in other opinions.

Recording on a lower setting sort of defeats the purpose of a 1080 camera. For now I just carry a couple of extra batteries. It gives me a reason to find some place to land.

Re: Where did you fly today?

I took the last flight in my Citabria today. Flew from Eaglesham Alberta to Steinbach Manitoba. 869NM. About 10 hrs flying. Me left butt cheek is numb. Was a great day for flying. Im not big on flying high, but at 9500-11500' I had a great tailwind and made around 115knots, pretty good for a Citabria with a flat prop.
Its a bitter sweet day. Glad to have her sold and move on to a bigger plane, but we have a lot of good memories in the plane. Its the plane I landed on a sandbar to ask my girlfriend to marry me, and many other good memories.

We sure did Skalywag. And we are excited for the memories we'll make in the new plane.
Bighorn, I'm looking at joining the 180 club. Looking at one right now. There is also a couple dream aircraft tundras for sale that I'm interested in.
