Where did you fly today?

Did you fly somewhere cool, take photos, and feel like telling the tale to make us drool from the confines of our offices? Post them up!

Re: Where did you fly today?

Hank (aka ATXCitab) flew over this morning and climbed in the back seat of the SQ2. Our plan was to fly to the waterfall, remove the driftwood, get some photos, then go to a nearby island (actually a peninsula now with our drought) and cut the brush back on a section that is sometimes used as a strip but has become overgrown.

On the way we wheeled a bunch of the same areas where I've previously posted photos. By the time we got to the waterfall not only was all the driftwood gone, but it looked like someone was setting up for a wedding. So no joy there today. A little further up the Colorado and we spotted a section of the river bank that looked promising although it was solid with tall prickly plants and flowers. We dragged it once to be sure it wouldn't be a problem (thank you 35's), and then landed for some photos.

The skinny guy in this photo (I think he has a tape worm) is Hank. In shorts the plants just ate up his legs. He ended up bounding around like a kangaroo.

After a bunch of photos were taken we headed to the island for some brush removal.

Tragically, ATXCitab (Hank Sasser) perished in a crash in August 2014. He was a great guy and will be missed. -Z

Took my little girl flying on Saturday. We flew up to Red Hills to give the owners a thank you gift for letting us have a fly-in on their property. My daughter asked to go flying. Just made my day!

Re: Where did you fly today?

Got back from my first time airplane camping... Nothing big, just a buddy and me for one overnight at Indian Creek to do some camping and fishing. The sun near sunrise is a b*tch on departure. Lots of Supercub strip baggers came in Sunday morning but other than that it was pretty quiet. Nice place.

My faithtful steed

Re: Where did you fly today?

To Seattle, the easy and quick way! A family re-union of sorts, had to meet a firm schedule there and back anyway, so that left out me flying direct , I've been hosed by fog enough times there to be a bit leery.

First I jumped in the S-7, and flew to Hailey, (1 + hr) where Alaska Airlines offers DIRECT service to Seattle, (unlike the larger Idaho cities of Idaho Falls, Pocatello, Twin Falls, driving to Boise or SLC wasn't an attractive option  ). Realizing I was plenty early and rather then kill time in the terminal, I found some good lift on the ridge east of the Picabo strip, and hung out working it for a half hour, at a 1.8 GPH and less throttle setting. Then I headed down the ridge a few miles and finally throttled back up and contacted the tower for landing. I parked of course in the GA section, got the folding bike out, and rode into town for beer and Mexican food, still killing time, and hell I was done flying for the day.. At least as pilot in command. I then walked around to the passenger boarding area. VERY convenient and low key casual as compared to the big city madhouse alternative, and about 1.5 hrs later was in Seattle. =D> The Bombardier 300Q (I think) prop jet was, I hate to say it, much more comfortable and fast then the S-7,,,, not as much fun though. Today on my arrival back at Hailey, I was blasting off as PIC once more about 10 minutes after deplaning the airliner, and actually taxied by about 50' from it. The only bad part about the trip was the Seattle wx was perfect the entire time, severe clear, I was hoping it was going to be socked in, to get the max bang for my airliner buck, no such luck.

My brother and I took the Boeing tour, (WOW!) and while waiting, like the rural rubes we are, postulated on the various airliners on the ramp, why they were there, I figured it was for maintenance. #-o Later we realized they were brand new planes not yet delivered, hard to fathom they are building them faster then they can get rid of them, this also explained why they were all so clean and in such great shape!

Dirt Bike season has me scouting some new trails for our group adventures.
The Uncompahgre Plateau. Another reason the western slope is a great place to live.

Re: Where did you fly today?

Hey S-12 pilot that was a fun video of the Uncompahgre Plateau. Years ago I did some motorcycle camping in that area. The whole time I was thinking how cool it would be to check out the area from air. I also repeated the name to myself over and over. Uncompahgre sounds so exotic. Thanks for finally satisfying my curiosity about the aerial view!

I saw a bunch of people taking pictures at that event, is there an event webpage that they might be uploaded to?

Re: Where did you fly today?

Made a quick trip up into the Winds this morning to start scouting bighorn sheep with a buddy who drew a tag. Forgot to bring my camera, so these are just a couple of quick and dirty cellphone shots.

These first two were taken at about 12,500 feet. There was plenty of rock still above us in several directions.

This last one is Green River Lakes. We came through the mountains via the notch just to the left of Square Top, which sits up at the head of the lake.

Re: Where did you fly today?

RP, do you have slats on your plane? Or what is that on the leading edge.
Nice pics.

Re: Where did you fly today?

Rob's right--I was flying the SQ-2. Those slats come in handy when you're slowing down to 40 mph to look for sheep.

Caught a bunch of trout downstream of Green River Lakes….

Re: Where did you fly today?

One of my favorite spots in Wyoming. In addition to getting my first elk there, I later killed a 6x6 up on the very top of White Rock. Beautiful place with lots of neat memories. When I kick the bucket (hopefully later, rather than sooner), that's where my ashes are going.
