Where did you fly today?

Did you fly somewhere cool, take photos, and feel like telling the tale to make us drool from the confines of our offices? Post them up!

Re: Where did you fly today?

Up!

Need to find out how high a 50 hp J-4 will fly before setting off for Lompoc in a few weeks. Got her up to 5,900 before the light ran out. Started at 4,000). Was also chasing a J-2 around the patch.

And yesterday, the J-2 and the J-4 did some good in the evening light.

Re: Where did you fly today?

After all the epic scenes of real mountains and fabulous back country LZs, I hesitate to post any of my flying in the bucolic hinterland of northern Virginia. The afternoon thunderstorms held off on Sunday, so I too a quick spin over the Blue Ridge Parkway section of the Appalachian Mountains. These shots aren't of epic terrain or big, joyous gathers, but they did constitute my fix for a Sunday afternoon.

This is the Shenandoah River near Luray, VA

Here is a better view of what we call "mountains" out east

Someone built a home on the ridgeline in hopes of getting the view we have each time we fly:

And here's home base - I like chasing my shadow at the end of the day

My dog flies with me pretty often, but she is more interested in the shade under the wing than the flight itself...

Flyhound,

The west (and the Idaho backcountry) are damned amazing and beautiful. It's something everyone should experience.

I will say, however, I have a whole new appreciation for our low DA and that air so thick you can see your prop slice thru it!

Used to be one of my favorite weekend lunch destinations when I was based out of Palo Alto. Loved Half Moon Bay!

Re: Where did you fly today?

Flew up to LaCrete to visit the inlaws and go to a cousins wedding. On the way home today, we had some fun air amd clouds to deal with. Tried climbing above them but at 8500 I quit trying, as theu were a lot higher yet. Dropped back down to 5500 and skirted under them.

The plane had some good company to park with at the airport. A couple nice King Air 200s.

Re: Where did you fly today?

Around and about the Montana/Idaho border.

I pushed SAVE on my mental GPS for this site, I always transit this area low down, and never noticed this area before. The pic was taken from 11+K, to put things in perspective, the saying "if it looks smooth it may be", comes to mind, no time for a looksee that day but another time I'll check it out up close and personal.
Image

The old airstrip at West Yellowstone, obviously this area is totally unsuited for landing a modern airplane, of any type, though apparently safe enough for ATV's, dirt bikes, snow machines, and any other wheeled conveyance. At least this is what I have been told  Who'd want to land here anyway, so close to town, on dirt, when you can land miles away on pavement? #-o Don't get me started.....
