BRD, I don't know how else to say it except you've got serious game with a lens. Great setup and execution on every shot.

JDW wrote:Great pictures Ranch Pilot. Just wondering if you have ever landed on the road there, before you get to the lakes? Hunted there years ago & remember a ranch just before you get up there to the lakes?

JDW, yep, that road is like a nice long 20 mile runway. It is consistently one of the most washboarded roads in the state, so it's a lot easier to fly than drive! I know an outfitter up there who says he just rebuilds his horse trailers every year after hunting season from using that road.

On my flight yesterday, I was scouting a potential landing spot up on Little Sheep Mountain. The hillside meadow I was checking out is at 10.4K. It just gave me that much more respect for Pops and his 11K+ landing on Bunker Hill!

As an unpaid consultant for the Bureau of Reclamation, I monitor the water flow of various bodies of water in the area. I do this for free, as a way of giving back. If I ever see a problem I'll mention it to them :D
The Snake, looking good!Image

A classic case of it looking smooth, but not really, near Bear Lake from the Wyoming side. Looks good here right? ImageA closer look, cleverly concealed in the brush, great camouflage, are a lot of rocks, some big enough to be a problem, many overflights and extended circling found a route that worked, but after landing it and inspecting it all closer, I'm not going back to this site  Image This site, not landed (too weird) is more then rocky, it appears to be nothing BUT rock, looks pretty smooth but it just freaked me out. Density alt. here was close to 11K. Image A billboard, for pilots I guess, no roads around anyway, about 8K', doesn't seem like it would pay, I guess that's why there is no ad on it?Image A small hard scrabble, kind of home made looking mom and pop type of mining operation. The crew appear to live in various small RV's scattered around the area, no power and no water. This one guy had it made, his little shack hanging over the canyon, his own crapper not too far away, and a shaded deck.Image

CG, was the little mining place over near Kemmerer, WY? I feel like I saw that when I was thru there.

Good eye Evan, about 10 or 15 miles west it was, as I recall. It could have also been a fossil dig, lots of that going on around there. Small world!

It is a small world indeed. As I was passing thru north of Pocatello and Bear lake I was looking at all the nice ridges thinking, "I wonder if Simko has landed there...........Or there!!!!!!.........Or there!!!"

Lots of possibilities. I need to get Swingle motivated for another trip out there and we should come play in your neck of the woods. I loved that leg of my flight.

Not today, but from that leg of the trip northeast of Pocatello on the way to Kemmerer.

Ranch Pilot

Not only were you the one that got me of my duff to go exploring the red desert area but your photos of the Winds always bring a smile to my face. 30+ years (and 60 lbs ago  ) I had trodden over much of what you show in your photos. A friend and I climbed square top on a weekend, leaving the Casper area after work on a Friday, got there at midnight, awoke at dawn and climbed that sucker. It's a heck of a lot further from the end of the lakes than it looks. Hopefully someone will scatter my ashes with the same view of square top as in your photo. FYI, even if it were legal, no the "top" is not "landable". They don't make tires big enough to go over a few of those 3-4' ledges

Keep those pics of the winds coming. They make my day, every day. At some point I intend to get over that way again just to shake your hand and say thanks in person.

Chubby the Fairchild went to its new owners in Southeast Iowa this weekend. I think they liked it!

Beautiful Fairchild. I had a chance to trade one of my Stearmans for an excellent Fairchild, but I was too tall to fit in the cockpit. Still a beautiful plane. Kinda like a junior Reliant.
