Re: Where did you fly today?

I went poking around the Chesapeake yesterday. Unusually low humidity for this time of year. That was sweet!

Landing at 3W3. A pretty good crab salad is available at the Kentmorr restaurant about a block from the airport on the water!

On the way home the haze came in pretty thick. The party was definitely coming to an end. By mid-evening, thunderstorms ruled the skies.

A new 7,000' ridgetop. om the way to breakfast. I found some junk up there, a broken deep cycle battery, left to rot. I strapped it down and took it with me, and got 10 buck this AM at the local recycler, that covered the breakfast.Image

Breckenridge, CO with Lake Dillon in the upper. The old airstrip is long gone now (center).

I always love looking at 14ers from the air. Here is Holy Cross (14,009ft) and the stone cabin on Halo Ridge that was built in the mid 1920's.

Glenwood Springs, CO with Mount Sopris in the upper.

It was a beautiful day for CO mountain flying.

Took these 4 neighbor boys up for their first flight in a small plane last night. Judging by the smiles, they enjoyed it! After this flight I took their little sister and dad up as well, but phone was dying and never got a pic. Afterwards the daughter gave me a big hug, so she seemed to enjoy it as well. Love introducing kids to aviation. They were already scheming how to buy a plane together by the time the left the yard. David

Re: Where did you fly today?

An hour away, to Copper Basin, west of Mackay, to what I think is the highest strip in Idaho, at 7920'. Always pretty secluded, this time was no different. Kind of a hazy looking sky but dead calm and smooth air. The pass coming in from the east is 9K, just real high terrain all around, for sure early in the morning kind of place, I was outa there, after I ran out of coffee, by 7:30. I hit it at least once a year, and have yet to see another plane there. Lot's of old mines (real spooky ones, as in you very easily fall into some of them, no warning signs either, this ain't no theme park  ) Smiley Creek is behind those mountains in the background, more or less, that direction anyway, as is Hailey.

One way out is to follow the dirt road down hill all the way that dumps you out above the Mackay Res., you can just float on out of there as the descending terrain matches your throttled back glide. I timed it perfect, as being a work day I had to be in cell coverage and sure enough right at 8 I was "at work", or at least ready to take a call. The Mackay strip is a great resource, as if you land long on the north end, it is a 2 minute walk to a new upgraded cafe/gas station, I timed it. For those of us scrounging mogas enroute, it is a gem.Image

Re: Where did you fly today?

My flight review was due this month. Instead of doing the same old basic maneuvers I've made it a habit of getting some high altitude operations and some mountain flying experience. For my last two flight reviews I've flown out of Bishop, CA and on this particular flight we went up to Lee Vining.

Here is a link to my blog with pictures.
