N12QT is one beautiful airplane! We did the brake pedal mod as well (I think I saw a pic of that in your album), it made a lot of difference in the comfort level for ground handling and braking.

Re: Where did you fly today?

The air stayed good for about three hours this morning so I went out and landed about 40 places.

This first one is a new spot on a local river bottom.
Image

About 20 miles away is this spot I've been meaning to land. It's actually part of the lake bottom, which actually goes all the way to the hills in the upper left. No idea why this big mud flat hasn't grown over like everything else. Anyway I drug it first as cattle or pigs have dug some pretty large deep holes that would give the 35's trouble. Came around, landed it, hopped out and walked around taking pictures. When I climbed back in I brought lots of mud (shit?) with me. How is it that it stuck to my shoes but not my tires?
Image

I know I know, you're thinking just another gratuitous waterfall shot. But really I had a perfect legitimate reason to land there - so I could shuffle around in the wet grass and clean my tennis shoes. But I payed the price. When I knelled down to take a picture something stung the back of my ankle. Yeow!

Re: Where did you fly today?

I went looking for the east coast's version of backcountry strips last weekend. If you hold the camera just right it looks like you are someplace remote, but there really isn't any serious back country out here. Considering the population density out here, it is amazing that there is any undeveloped country. Fortunately, I found bits and pieces here and there.

First I flew over the Green Ridge State Park in West Virginia
Image

Then I passed over some lakes

and at least one private airport I'd like to get permission to land at before I leave this area:

I finally landed at what looks like a very remote spot

The sad truth of what this all looks like is on the video. Sigh.

Re: Where did you fly today?

Great air again this morning so hit all the usual close spots, then headed for the Colorado above Buchanan. Landed this new spot. On take off I went through some fresh cow pies and the 35's slung it everywhere.

Re: Where did you fly today?

My 15 year old daughter, the last of 5 daughters and the last of 7 total; headed north from Kotzebue (AK) this morning in search of the upper Noatak. We meandered across Kobuk Lake and beyond Nimiak to the upper Squirrel Rover to the Omar River. The water was window clear and she enjoyed seeing the fish in the river. About two moils above the confluence of the Squirrel and the Omar, we began seeing brown bears. They were feasting on the chum salmon and most didn't care we flew over them at 200'. When we crossed over the pass and entered the Noatak Valley we were met by sun shine and light breezes. I landed on a gravel bar big enough to accommodate a 737 and kicked around for a couple hours. the we took off and headed down river to the Kelly River where we landed and ate some lunch. Taurus (aka: Victoria) tossed around a spinner amongst a large hole full of chum, but nothing was interested. We'll be glad when they spawn out and the grayling are left to flirt with our lures. After lunch we flew up the Kelly River but the winds were too severe to land s we beelined it back to Kotzebue. What a great day to spend with my daughter.

Re: Where did you fly today?

I had aired downed the Airstreaks to 1.5 lbs prior to launching this morning, I was only going 3 miles away but 8600', and past experience up there has shown I want the tires real soft, lot's of embedded rock and shale. My place is at 5400', and I was climbing through 8,000' when the phone rang  A local HVAC contractor needed me and the crane at 9:15 at the big mall in town, it was 8:17. #-o This guy is an inactive/past pilot, and I think he get's a kick out of catching me playing and tries to get me "out of service". Ain't gonna happen!

I continued the climb, circled a few times over the ridge line, long enough to realize the winds would preclude messing around up there that day anyway, and then dove for home. Hauled ass into town and the crane yard in the car, "raced" across town, and at 9:18 I was setting the crane up. I take it for granted, but I have a pretty cool mix of real back country flying ops while still being able to make a living in the "city". Today was a mind twister, going from the mind set of the off airport hoped for landing, (getting all hyped up) to an hour later working in front of the mall in town, watching shoppers walk by to get their kicks in the store of their choice, different strokes for different folks!

Re: Where did you fly today?

TomD hooked it up with a ride from Oak Harbor to Auburn. It allowed me to get home early before leaving back to cali for 3-4 weeks. only 107 more days and I get to finally move here.

Despite a little weather the air was smooth and the flight was great. Second time in a Maule!
