1958 Cessna 182 modification project...
Have problems with your aircraft? Maybe just questions about how best to tune or adjust something? Regs or maintenance? Need to know the best way to do something?
Very nice and my colors!!!!! Looks like the mains will touch first too.

Unusual to see a 1953 180-ish paint scheme on a 182, but it came out looking great, Brian.
I'm curious as to where the Selkirk CF cowling weighs in compared to the stock aluminum?

Cessna Skywagon -- accept no substitute!
No levelling of the airplane was needed to establish the CG? The gear configuration just worked out, or were you able to simply adjust the nose gear height for the weigh in?

The cowling was about the same weight.. pretty heavy construction and support structure…

That photo was taken before we leveled it.. wound up taking just about all the air out of the nose wheel tire.. [emoji23]

When we weighed our Bearhawk with everything level the tail wheel weight was 75 lbs. When I lowered the tailwheel to the ground and weighed it it was 150 lbs.. I was surprised to see that big of a change but it sure showed how the c of g moves around based on angle. As an experiment later I figured out where the exact cg was and hung a 1/2" nut from a string attached to the ceiling. It was most interesting to watch this plumbob move around with different angles of attack. It also tells you real quick when you don't have the ball centered. It was just a real good visual demonstration of how much the cg moves around under different conditions. The things some of us wonder about!!!

I hope you added the weight of the removed air back into the final weight, accuracy is everything!

Yep... added the 0.000109 pounds of air @ -8 inches forward of the datum for an added 0.000000192 inches forward CG difference...

Good intel on the cowling weight. Are the Selkirk cowlings actually Carbon Fiber, or are they fiberglass? They used to be fiberglass, I believe.

UPDATE... 2025
So, 4 years after completing this airplane. Reider had to sell due to personal reasons last year. The buyer wound up donating the aircraft to the Jim Richmond Backcountry Aviation Foundation. The foundation has changed the N number and it is currently the grand prize raffle aircraft where you can buy tickets here
https://jrbaf.org/raffle/Kind of an interesting turn of events for the old bird.
