Flaps the-rigged and ready for Austin. Been spending a lot of time practice teaching and flying maneuvers in the right seat of the 180. Can't wait to get the check ride done here in a few weeks.

Sure is good to be in cub.

Sounds like you got the flaps squared away/full deflection? What did you change to correct them?

Re: Aktahoe - Adventures in a Backcountry Super Cub Rev 2

We lengthened the push rod on the bell crank, tighten cables and made flap handle adjustments. Full deflection is no every it of 50/55 degrees. You can't pull the third notch of full flaps until your around 25mph.

1st notch gives you around 15/20 degrees. Handle pulls good at 45/50mph

2nd notch gives you 35/40degrees and really is enough. Handle pulls comfortably 35/40mph

3rd notch is not an option until real slow 25mph or less, takes about 15/20 lbs of pull strength and gives you 50/55 degrees. The deflection slightly increases as you touch down given the slight blow back. Static on the ground full deflection gives you every bit of 65/70 degrees. It's nutz.

I can't get the plane to stall. It only vibrates slightly and sinks. Add a quick shot of power and it moved forward again. 75 hours in and I'm really just now starting to figure it out but still have a long way to go. It's spooky flying that slow with a high AOA that low to the ground. I need to learn to trust it. Practice practice pratice

Good weekend in Austin. Love my pilot friends. Lots of experiences that will be remembered and thankful for.

The bird performs so well landing. Now to maximize the engine performance for full power. That's today's project. Building an airbox.

Wow! That looks like fun! So Kevin, I have to ask, do you have a parking brake set up?

No parking brake. Find a good side hill shut down or don't shut down at all.

I have been loading a bunch of other videos here:

Re: Aktahoe - Adventures in a Backcountry Super Cub Rev 2

No parking brake, really? I LOVE my MATCO parking brake, real simple and light, and you can also use it to lock up just one brake. This can be a real handy feature.....Turning sideways is fine, until I have too much fuel in my wing tanks (no crossfeed shut off valve, and I don't want any) and the hill gets too steep. I can't imagine a off airport mountain landing airplane without one frankly. What, you concerned about the weight?!

Also, I have used mine to illustrate the power of the airplane, by taking off with the brakes locked, this never fails to impress any onlookers #-o

Re: Aktahoe - Adventures in a Backcountry Super Cub Rev 2

I'm sure I'll have a brake at some point, just no need really ever. I don't like leaving it sit side hill for any length of time but I'm certainly not disagreeing. Made me feel better when I asked a group of cub guys if they had E brakes and they all said no.

Anyhow, good times this morning. 35's ski a lot different than 31's

Re: Aktahoe - Adventures in a Backcountry Super Cub Rev 2

My tail will slough off downhill on a good slope if I parked like that, was my point. And once, my downhill tire folded in half! I was at 2.5 lbs pressure......plus it makes getting out of the cockpit a bitch. The other Cub pilots with no E brakes? I find that surprising, I LOVE my E brake!

Year ago, I was taxiing down my driveway in my Kitfox, thinking i could get around a trailer that was parked on the side (usually not there), I eyeballed it a little too close, and not until I realized I was not going to clear it did I also realize that without a parking brake and due to the slope I was stuck in the cockpit, with nothing handy to throw under a tire. Before cell phones, I was able to call the Poky tower 15 miles away (behind a mountain, I got lucky he heard me) and I gave him a neighbors phone number and minutes later he came down and solved the problem. Had e brakes ever since! You got every other backcountry bell and whistle known to man on that thing, I'm just stunned no e brake, I guess I'm a pussy. Maybe I'll take mine off, ha ha! Looking good otherwise =D>
