Re: My new BCSC - Rev 2 COMPLETED!!! 7/12/16

Well she is about ready to come home. I have been living in her all week flying from sun up to sun down, literally. We had some high temps on the #2&4 cylinders early on but yesterday morning after numerous flight tests and various modifications to our plenum baffling and cowl, temps finally came down to the 380,390's. 1&3 have always been lower but started hot in the 460's. 2&4 were higher in the first runs. We expected that as we had no mods to the cowl with limited baffling adjustments to our plenum. We needed to start somewhere. On one flight test we took out the plenum, out of pure curiosity and we didn't get past the taxi as temps went up quick. We expected that.

We ended up making the plenums tight around the cylinders and closing off all the options for air to escape. Think Venturi. The thought was that increasing the Venturi and more pressure air/oxygen was the ticket. Through the testing we just kept making the plenums air flow space tighter. It worked. On each flight you could see the temps dropping.

Now fast forward, after a couple 2 plus hour flights running at max rpm 2400/2500 staying below redline of course with DA at 8,600', the temps stayed in the 380/390 range on the two hot ones. 1&3 were in the 370's. EGTs were in the 1150-1200 range and 23.5 MP. Fuel was around 16g an hour. Full rich was also a key ingredient for this O-360 fixed pitched producing 202hp.

At 2350 she flies at around 83mph with great temps and an 10.5g per hour fuel burn. I could not be happier. I have learned an incredible amount through all the testing and modification changes. My mind is spun.

The beast is ready to come home in another day or so where I'll have all week to practice and gear up for the flight east to Oshkosh. My plan is to leave early Friday morning now. I have to spend some family time this week before I bail again for the Oshkosh 10 day trip. My wife is being extremely patient. Can't take advantage of that.

So, yesterday the fun really began and it was time to start putting the bird to its paces. I must of made 50 or more landings at the little dirt strip and another 10-15 in the hills/prairie around Casper and Douglas. Touchdown speeds are consistent at 18-20mph with only 2 notches of flaps. I have yet to play with notch 3 and 4 as I really need to do more slow flight in those settings. Long story short, the big wing, leading edge slats and the Keller (Performance) flaps are everything they are cracked up to be. The plane flies far better than I ever anticipated and my expectations were high. The new BCSC is hand down the best performing STOL aircraft I have ever flown. No question

The blue / Silver plane in the one photo is the new four place BCSC just rolling out of the factory in Douglas.

So happy for you, Quinner! Can't wait to watch you make that thing really dance. Given that all your hours thus far have been at DAs of 7K or more, I'm hoping you'll see even more ridiculous performance when you get it down lower where there are some air molecules for it to breathe (like OSH or...Valdez =P~ )!

For our brethren (and sisteren) out there who haven't done much STOL above 7K, it's hard to even describe how much effect it has on ground roll, etc. (not to mention losing 20+ % of your engine performance before you ever leave the ground). That's what makes the images from Pops and Kevin so amazing--they're doing stuff at altitude that I couldn't do at sea level!

As for the long-awaited 4-place, for anyone who is curious, stop by booth 423 at OSH and you'll be able to crawl into it yourself!

Wow - you really turned that thing around in record time. Now the (second) fun part begins....

The build is great fun itself, but flying your very own 100% personalized creation just can't be beat!

I look forward to see what's to come. =D> =D> =D> =D>

Congratulations on finishing your SQ2! It ended up looking amazing, and from your reports and videos I can tell you're going to be grinning ear-to-ear for a long time flying this bird!

What did your useful load come out to after all the mods?

Useful load is a 1055. Flew 150 shy of the max gross 2400 yesterday. Got off the ground in about 5-6 seconds or "one thousand one" ...and so on.

Temps are all under 400 and she cruises at 83-85mph with the 35's. Gonna post some pics here from tapatalk next.

Re: Aktahoe - Adventures in a Backcountry Super Cub Rev 2

Just went back and re-read the entire thread. That's a really cool plane and as stated how cool is it to have a one of a kind custom bird.

The useful load is great. It'd be a great moose hauler.

Truly awesome build. There are a lot of planes that I want, but this goes very close to the top of the list:)

Re: Aktahoe - Adventures in a Backcountry Super Cub Rev 2

The big wing and leading edge slats are like cheating.

Got the cub up over 11,000' with a 25mph headwind on 35's doing 70mph over the ground

So Kevin, you thought it would be done in January, it took till July. Was it worth the wait?

Backup ASI? Open a window or door, seriously. Not talking IFR here, ( or are we?!).
Way cool Kev,you NEEDED that new bird =D> And how's Bruce's slatted S-7S doing on those coyotes? Best thing ever for an S-7 pilot like me, seeing what he hunts with, "made me proud!"

Practicing in its natural environment. IFR only if needed. Good to have the option is all.
