I, against my earlier better judgement re: the WX on my return, took off Sat, morning for the fly-in. Figured better late then never. I had a throttle cable break in Battle Mountain, which didn't bring me down, on the contrary, couldn't land until killing the engine. On the Rotax, which has 2 carbs, if you lose one throttle linkage it goes to full throttle while you still have control over the other, this confuses the hell out of the engine. By the time I MacGivered it back to a somewhat airworthy status, it was late enough, and more importantly the repair was so half ass, to make it kind of pointless to continue, so I took advantage of the bastard headwind I had earlier and scooted home, not touching the throttle the entire time. It was pretty damn dark and the weather was really iffy, so I texted a neighbor who's a ski patroller and has some common sense and first aid experience ("stop by in 40 min., got throttle problems, could be an interesting landing"), to his credit he was there, and with a fire extinguisher AND a video camera #-o . The approaching storm and the darkness AND the frigging throttle all combined, of course, and I made my first deadstick landing on my uphill strip (no other way to get it slowed down). Came real close, due to the rapidly approaching darkness, to landing in a farmers field a few valleys over and spending the night, camped out in the rain, but pushed on and squeaked it in, I should have listened to my own earlier advice on this trip.

Had that all typed out, and then heard about the mid air, Tyler and I flew together earlier this summer and we were looking forward to doing it some more, in fact he was one of the reasons I pushed it trying to make it there. Not much to add other then damn shame, good kid gone too early. Both him and TomW of course. Glad Joey is OK.

a half assed repair, almost dark, Questionable weather, and a dead stick landing on final, all not worth continuing to the fly in but worth flying home... are you shitting me.... this kind of thinking and decision making is why I don't go to fly ins as much as I used to.....

Hey guys i have just woke up to hear the news about the accident, i horrified. I certainly dont want anyone speculating about details trying to explain what happened, im sure that will come to lught in due course. Can i however just comfirm that we have very sadly lost 2 of our own today?

My thoughts are with them, but particuarly there family and friends, and anyone at the hsf, especially those who may have seen the accident. This is horrible news and certainly outlines the fact that like any sport, it most certainly comes with its dangers

We are all upset. Consider withholding judgement of our fellow flyers and the terrible circumstances that have darkened this day.

Zane is spot on with his advice to refrain. There will be a time for judgement and discussion once the facts are in and investigations are complete six months or more into the future.

Today we grieve and support each other. Several families have just experienced a tragedy that will never be forgotten. They are quietly looking over our shoulders today reading our words, trying to understand.

The outpouring of honest, heartfelt sadness and compassion is all over this site. I am humbled by it and wish to focus on it, if for no other reason then out of respect for the families.

Our words belong to them this day.

I am as deeply saddened by this event as any of you and my comments in no way were directed towards our two lost friends... I think I made my point though...

I met the nicest bunch of pilots face to face out on the playa. We are missing two of them now. I sincerely hope their families and friends can face this loss with courage and memories of good men. Let them rest in peace... Nick

Flying is dangerous. If you think otherwise, you are new at this sport. Mind the gravity not the gap.

Re: High Sierra Fly-in, INFO - 2014 - UPDATED 10/3

I ache each time a fellow pilot dies while flying. The first part of that ache comes from the loss of a kindred spirit. The second part of the ache comes from wanting to know what happened and to understand the lessons to be learned from the tragedy. Unfortunately, that ache takes months to address. The final ache comes from knowing how easily it could have been me. Flying is such an unforgiving activity. Whatever the cause of trouble, there is often too little time, and too few options to make things right. Frequently, the final report coming from the investigation doesn't offer any specific lessons that I can take to heart to improve my own safety in the air. Perhaps that is the greatest ache of all. Knowing that something that has consumed my passion is ultimately so risky and unforgiving. I hope the families involved find a way to make their own with what has happened.

Re: High Sierra Fly-in, INFO - 2014

Had a great time at the fly-in. Took my time getting home and Wally, Dennis, Creighton and I enjoyed a few more opportunities to land off airport on the way back to Salt Lake City.

Had a particularly good time this morning with Wally in Utah's west desert and Delle.

Tested the fuel in pump1 and it was e0 so we topped off his 182 and enjoyed cool smooth air for a bit longer.

Briefly met some very fun, very awesome people. Thanks for that.

Re: High Sierra Fly-in, INFO - 2014

Again one of the best flyins I've ever been to. It was so good to catch up with friends and make a lot of new ones. I got to do some flying with a good friend too, which we had yet been able to do. A lot of highlights and great memories made.

Thanks to everyone that put so much work and effort into making it happen. It is much appreciated.

Wally and I got to spend a lot of time together before the fly in. He's an awesome guy. Really enjoyed spending time and flying with him. Creighton too. Hope to spend more time with the contingent at next flyin. :)

Tyler "Choss"....What can I say. Enjoyed your company here on BCP, and really was happy when you stopped by and landed for an iced tea this summer. It was nice to finally have a face to put to your name other than just the thumbnail picture of your dog wearing a hat. :D You sure had a lot of life in you, and my wife and I could see it when we sat and talked to you that day.

Take care friend. [-o<
