Wolf’s Super-170

Wolf’s actually using two words where two hundred and twenty two are more appropriate.

Del Air STC with A1A. The engine dyno’d at just under 200 hp and with the MT, she climbs like a raped ape.

The 170B has bigger gear, Dessers, dbl puck breaks, baby bush, sportsman/vg’s, BAS tail pulls and harnesses, etc…

The panel has AV-30s, GNS430, 796, SL40, a CGR combo and a TailbeaconX, along with all new wiring, klixon 7277 and Tyco switch breakers. We installed a split master with a TCM switched ignition so its a bit more modern… lots of attention to detail and advantage taken with Garmin discrete inputs etc…

Interior is set up for exploration with an ext baggage, FA Dodge jump, cargo nets, and a ton of tiedown points and ROK straps.

FWF is totally new incl a light weight starter and high output alt etc etc…

We re-rigged the bird and she is a joy to fly; hammering it… he’s done over 20 hrs of training in the last 4 days.

He’s heading back to Europe tomorrow, but will be back to take the bird on a 6 week tour later in Aug. he’s a bit to humble to ask himself, but he would love a list of BCP folks to visit/camp with around the US. (Gentleman’s adventure style)

Hopefully when he catches his breath and recovers from me barking instruction, he’ll take some time to share more of his thoughts.

Congrats Wolf!

Re: My Super 170

Cool angle on the photo, makes it look like the a C170B "swept-wing" Mach 2 variant.

He is always welcome here. Not really that far away, but if he’s looking for a close spot feel free to get in touch. 0NY0 North Creek, NY.

Re: My Super 170

...when he catches his breath and recovers from me barking instruction...

Still recovering…LOL… but already energized enough to start dreaming.

With my substantially upgraded bird I’d like to do an “upgraded” version of my ’19 camping trip through the eastern US

trip report here:
https://backcountrypilot.org/forum/tr-t ... VW#p329934

It will probaby be a 4-6 week adventure starting around mid August.

I’d love to go out west and first visit flying friends in Boulder, CO.
Depending on a number of factors I could then continue on to the West Coast.
But of course it’s about the journey, not the destination…

So I’d like to tap into the wealth of experience of you bcp’ers: if you're planning a camping under the wing trip starting in MA, what route would you take, what places and/or pilots would you recommend to visit?

I'm not thinking hardcore backcountry adventure, but "German-Gentleman's-Adventure-Style" doesn't mean I'll only land at airports with beer gardens and bratwurst stands.

Curious, so please let me know your ideas, suggestions.

I love this shot. We need more poignant portraits of people with their birds, not making duck lips or posing like an idiot. Just a dude like Wolf, probably tired from all the automatic rough and enduring Greg's rants. The weight of the world on his shoulders and realization that he traded a great deal of money to secure this 170's future.

Congratulations Wolf! Ein besonderes schönes Flugzeug!
I’m only an hour or so west and happy to host for an eve to lick our 170 build wounds over a Pilsner.
There will be a moment, when your flying, when it will all make sense.

Last time to admire details and workmanship before it goes to the paint shop !

I really like the way the blisters are installed from the inside - looks super clean!

Re: My Super 170

It was an intense 12 months period after I decided to turn my bird into a Super 170.

At the beginning, progress was in line with expectations, but as any experienced project manager knows: the closer you get to the finish line, the more work lies ahead.

Accordingly, a lot has happened in the last three months - driven by the passion to make a dream come true.

Now we’re entering the last phase. Flying her already, fine tuning the parameters and planning the final steps.

Here's another view that shows the attention to detail and excellent workmanship: air intake and cover for the old exhaust outlet.

Re: My Super 170

Once we got into upgrade mode we couldn’t leave the instrument panel alone.

A lot of thought went into the layout and how to combine modern technology with the classic look of a legacy panel.

Thanks to Greg's habitual pursuit of perfection it turned out great - and looks gorgeous, not only at night.
Lots of capability, perfectly integrated functionality: twin AV-30s w/ tailbeaconX, GNS430 wired to the 796, SL40 w/ a PMA audio panel, CGR combo engine monitor, twin GSB-15's etc.

Makes me dream about long cross country flights - especially if they extend into the dark!

After all this trip planning it's time to continue - or reactivate - this thread.

Approach her from the front!!

The blue tip of Whiskyblue is the foremost witness of a stunning paint job:
The MT Kevlar spinner expertly primed, painted and buffed

All part of a comprehensive upgrade.
