Re: 5/01/2009 - BackcountryPilot NE Fly-In - Sciota, PA (50PA)

Since it looks like we are going to have a big crowd coming we did a little airport maintenance this past weekend to get ready. We cleared an area on the south side of the runway of scrub trees and then took a brush hog to it. That gave us a space big enough for about 15 planes. We will use that space for folks that are camping.

There were a couple dead trees down that we cut up, split, and stacked. That should give us enough firewood for both nights around the fire ring. We are also planning to bring in a truckload of gravel to put down in the parking area by the EAA hangar where it sometimes gets a little muddy.

Got a keg of Bud and a keg of Bud Light on order. That okay with everybody?

Less than seven weeks to go!

Wow! After reading all these posts it looks like there is going to be a good turn-out. I guess 2 kegs of beer will be plenty considering most pilots I know don't start drinking until daylight is gone and they're done flying for the day. Seeing all the preparation and planning you folks do I'd venture to say you take this fly-in stuff pretty serious! =D>

I just flew into Pegasus today (only 10 min over the Blue Mountain from my airport, 1N7), and Skystrider told me about this flyin... it's been a while since I visited this site and I hadn't heard about it. Sounds fun... I am planning to leave for the Valdez flyin on May 1, but I will try to pop in and say hi on the way!

Hey Guys,

Formulating a plan! If I leave from the Kansas City area in my C180 on Wednesday, April 22, I should get to Lakeland, SunNFun, that evening. Spend the 23 and 24 there, then to northern Florida about 70 knots to a C180/185 Flyin for a couple of days and then up to the Pocono's Flyin the next weekend. Obviously, I have about 4-5 days to fill on the way up there. Have friends in Chapel Hill, NC and Samford, Conn along with a brother in Mansfield, Mass, but are there any other stops or people to see that you guys would recommend on my round a bout trip? Anybody that would want to tag along would be welcome. Plan on doing it on the cheap, camping out, sleeping in the a/c unless better accomodations would be offered, I would buy the beer of course. Any ideas would be appreciated. Don't need to be back in Kansas City until the next fly-out. Email me at [email protected] if you have any ideas or post here. This is all weather dependent, of course.

Nick, you are most certainly welcome! And that goes for any other lurkers out there. We may have to dismantle some planes as they land to make room but we will manage.

It is almost time! You will know you are at the right airport because here is the banner you will see hanging on the blue and white tent!

For the Saturday movie night we have To Fly an IMAX classic that is visually stunning, a great video from Brad Thornberg of his group flying on skis in the winter on frozen lakes, and Big Rocks and Long Props: On Ice.

We have been invited to join a Poker Run on Saturday being sponsored by EAA Chapter 70 and the Lehigh Valley Flying Club for those that are interested. Plus, the Golden Age of Aviation museum opens that Saturday at Grimes airport which is about a 30 minute flight away.

The BCP Fly-In starts at noon on Friday but I will be there early for those that just can't wait to start the week end. We can always ring out for pizza that evening and sit around the camp fire.

Saturday night some of the girls are making food to help out for dinner and we have a couple of grills for your cooking pleasure.

Let me know if you need any help or have questions!

Re: 5/01/2009 - BackcountryPilot NE Fly-In - Sciota, PA (50PA)

I was out and about on Monday and flew to Lancaster to meet with friends for a while. Afterward I flew to Pegasus mainly to see if I could find it, since it's not on my GPS database. It wasn't a problem. It looks pretty nice and is only a 30 minute flight from Pottstown Muni.

I haven't been camping in years so I'm looking forward to seeing if I can hack "roughing it" at my age. A couple of my pilot friends from Keystone Flight have expressed an interest in coming and may show up as well.

I've never participated in a Poker Run OR visited Grimes since I returned to Pennsylvania so it may be a busy and interesting weekend for me.

If I get a chance I'll drop in Thursday to introduce myself to you and the early birds. See you soon.

Re: 5/01/2009 - BackcountryPilot NE Fly-In - Sciota, PA (50PA)

Well, the weather could not look much worse for this weekend. Thunderstorms starting Friday and going right through Sunday and beyond. After discussing this with several of the voices in my head we came to the consensus that moving the fly-in to the following week end might have some merit. Soooo.......

Lets move the First North East BackcountryPilot Fly-In to May 8, 9 & 10! Same place! Same beer! Same fun! Different weather! [-o<

Yaaaay! That might work. Hopefully everyone who planned to come can re-group. Saturday I may fly up to ZER to say hello to the guys whp painted my plane. They are having a cook-out around noon. I could head for Grimes after that and return to Pegasus in time for the movies and beer! So much for my diet!

Let's just hope the weather is kinder on the weekend of the 8th! [-o<
