Weather looks great Wed-Sat. I think I'll try to pull some strings at work and see if I can head out Wed and leave Sat morning. Do you think Rod would mind if I stayed there Thursday night too?

Thanks Gary..I know it's a tough decision to make. Will try to get out next Thursday, May 6 to make it there on Thursday or Friday. Very sorry for those who could make it this week but not next :(
Again if it does not work out next weekend, send the shirt and keep the rest or split it with Rod since I don't know how much out of pocket he has had to set this up..just want to keep the door open the next time I want to go there.

Re: Spring Utah Fly-in Pt 2 (April 30-May 2)

Gary,
I think this weekend was my only shot. I won't say it's an impossibility to make the next weekend, stranger things have happened but farming is like the weather you never know for sure till you get there. I expect to be planting corn that weekend if this 2.4 inches of rain in the last three days dries out. As late as we are getting started planting I will go from corn right into soybeans and that will take me past Memorial Day. If I do not show next weekend then you know the weather on this end is great, and that I am busy making my fortune. Gary, I thank you for the time spent, Hi Country for the offer of letting me be wingman for my first trip into the mountains and hope to meet you all at another time. As for the money, if I don't make it, Hi C has a good idea and If Rod won't take it then I would like to donate to RAF, seems like a good cause.

Gary/Zane, you may want to change the dates on the thread title to reflect the changes (May 7-9) so others know.

Re: Spring Utah Fly-in Pt 2 (April 30-May 2)

Gary,

Thanks for all the work. It sure looks like you have made the right decision for this weekend. That said, I won't be able to make it next weekend (prior commitments), but I hope the WX clears up so the rest of the guys can. I will miss the opportunity to get together with what looks like a great bunch of idiots... er, I mean esteemed back country pilots.

Per your post about sending the checks back, I would have said keep it to cover your expenses in organizing this thing, but it you insist, you can sell me a T-shirt from part of it (large, please), if you don't run out of them. I feel bad about buying a T-shirt for something I didn't attend, but I don't want you to have to eat it either (I hear they are bland and a bit dry).

I hope to see you and most of the other guys in Idaho later this summer. I'll try to organize my own Utah expedition when it dries out again.

Thanks again.

Re: Spring Utah Fly-in Pt 2 (April 30-May 2)

Gary,
I think you made the right call, flying the canyons in high winds just isn't that fun. I stopped in Monday at caveman, what an awesome place, the web site pictures don't really do it justice. Rod seems like a great guy. Here's hoping for better weather next week. I'm still in.

If they haven't been following the thread, I'm gonna assume that changeing the dates isn't gonna make much difference. It's only been about 3 months.

I know you are a lot smarter than me, and I don't know how it is in Nevada, but I've never had much luck callin a gal Big.

If you want to go up, pull back on the controls. If you want to go down, pull back farther.

Gary, I still owe you for a shirt. I was hoping someone could have it picked up for me or something. But now I'm hoping I can find a ride down for the new weekend it's happening now.

What's the closest paved strip coming from Denver in case I need to fly the rental Citabria and have someone pick me up to go into Caveman?

Tadpole,
You can ride from Del Norte with me. The family is going to be in Indiana, so it will just be me. I will be in West Texas this coming week working with the bees. I am planning on being back on Thursday to fly out Friday. That could be my only issue though, it is possible I might not get back untill Friday night.

Tom, that might work out fine. I'm in Indiana right now actually, the reason I wouldn't have made this original weekend.

cmon Gary,, ONly 100 MPH winds in Reno this morning and 50 MPH gusts in our local mts. Is that REEEAAAAlY bad enough to cancel a fly in. I mean cmon!!!! Same thing happened last year with gusts over 50 at my fuel stops. Had the Maule packed and ready to go till I checked weather that morning...OH well maybe next week... :?

My route to Caveman next week.
Image
Stop at Burns, OR. Elko, NV. Fillmore, UT. Caveman.

Is there anyplace along the way you think I should air tour or stop and see? I already have Dolores Point, Mexican Mt on the map, 2 places I want to see. Been to Mineral Canyon. I have Galens Utah book.

Here is a link to the google map. You can add place marks by clicking the edit button. The map is set to collaborate which means anyone can make changes.

Re: Spring Utah Fly-in Pt 2 (April 30-May 2)

Great News!!! I took a long shot and fired off an email to my chief pilot. I explained how the weather changed the date of the fly-in and asked if he could help in shuffling my trips (the automated system wouldn't allow it due to low reserve coverage). He said no problem, dropped my trip for next weekend, which allowed me to pick up a replacement trip for this weekend. Best part, the new trip is worth more $$ which will cover the cost of the fly-in.

So....we are a go again! See you all down there next weekend. We'll leave on the 7th and come back on the 9th after breakfast.

Gary, my flying partner and his wife probably won't be able to make it. Also, my sister-in-law has to work, so that will be 3 less for breakfast on Sunday morning. We'll still buy her shirt since I don't want to stick you with it. If someone else shows up that didn't order one and wants one, they can have hers.

Can't wait until next week. So glad we are going to be able to make it! :D =D>
