Back home, it was time to troubleshoot why I wasn't getting power to the GPS. The POH says there's a manual breaker on the back of the cigar lighter. Looking I wasn't finding any such breaker. I followed the wire to a fuse holder which contained a blown 2amp fuse. Must have been an "Upgrade" at some point. This got me wondering if a 2amp fuse is underkill for the circuit? .........

The cigar lighter circuit breaker on my airplane is a 5 amp as I recall. The GPS lighter-adapters I've seen (Garmin) have an appropriate sized fuse inside the adapter itself, it unscrews for access. My GPS-3 had a 1/2 amp fuse, don't recall on the 196 but I'm thinking 2 amp?
Daybreak-- one of my favorite places. I stopped in for the first time in a long time on the way home from the NWAAC antique fly-in a month or so ago. Someone at the fly-in told me that the owner doesn't welcome people flying in these days. No X on the strip, so I slow-orbitted several times and when nobody came out of the farmhouse with a shotgun, I went ahead & landed. Just sat by the river for a while & listened to the water. I'd met the owners in the past so I figgered I could get by with profuse apologies if they got after me, but nobody came over.
Do you have any inside dope on whether it's still OK to land there? In the past, when we were gonna come down and camp we'd call the owners & ask if it was OK and it always was. Real nice people. But I have seen some pilots come in there & abuse the owner's hospitality by buzzing the place, etc and generally acting like a-holes. I can see where that'd get the welcome mat rolled up & out away real quick.

Hit a few New Mexico strips on friday, Negrito at an elevation of 8150' was nice and cool.

Landed on a dirt road North of the Gila wilderness and something sure did not feel right!
Flew back to Beaverhead and found my tailwheel! Pivot axle broke leaving my wheel behind.
Sure glad to find it! Another reason I love my little old taildragger, just try getting home
with a missing nosewheel!

Re: Where did you fly today?

Inkom Idaho to Sydney Montana via the Tetons and Yellowstone Parks, saw the Snowbirds (Canadian) at the big airshshow. Saw Kent Pietsch's amazing routine in his '42 Interstate, what a great pilot, his landing on the pickup platform took place in a 20 MPH direct crosswind, and his low level aero routine is a mindblower, if you ever get a chance to see this guy, check him out!
Later in the day it got windy, gusts to 34 mph, and the locals were saying the next day was going to get REAL windy, and when eastern Montana locals say that it gets your attention!! I got out of there at the end of the show, launched right off the tie down spot as I did not have a wing walker and wasn't real sure I could hold that wing down in the 30 plus gusts, off in 50' or less I flew to Glendive and spent the night listening to the wind howl, and dreaded the next days flying. To my surprise, the front had pretty much passed by 6 AM and by the time I got to Livingston (notoriously breezy) it was only 8 MPH, thats like dead calm there.....I flew through the pass into Gardner and Paradise Valley, then stopped at West Yellowstone for just enough fuel to get me the last 100 plus miles home. 15.3 hrs in 2 days, and some of the best scenery around, and just enough spooky weather to keep it interesting! Averaged a bit under 4 gph with my Rans S7-S and 912S bird, max altitude 10 k plus, real low for that route, thats why I flew the passes.

Took off from Nampa at about 9 last night and flew to Idaho Falls. Haven't logged night time in a while, it sure was a nice flight.

Re: Where did you fly today?

First I had a bunch of F16's circling me, then I see Air Force One, and I'm thinking "oh s*^#".

Turns out, that everyone was practicing touch and goes. My GPS showed no TFR's, but I didn't get a briefing before I left, so I was a little shaken at first.

O had to be far away somewhere. This Air Force One did at least 4 T&G's while I was in their air space. The tower guy used a call sign of "Venus" something for it??? I had to circle and hold a couple times so that I wasn't knocked out of the air with his wake turb.

Re: Where did you fly today?

We flew from Albany, OR to Wagon Tire, OR-out in the middle of nowhere, headed to Burns, OR on #395-- just north of Alkali Lake State Airport, R03. Wagon Tire was a 2,000' strip with wide open approaches. You can land there and have breakfast at the cafe, I'm sure they would appreciate the business. Landing on their strip, must rate as an event, because when our 3 planes landed, the owner of the cafe came out and took pictures of us. Closed on Mondays, business number 541-493-2142. We had a great breakfast and had a good flight. 8)

Steve, Jim and I flew to a ranch strip to do some quail hunting this weekend.
The quail won.

Re: Where did you fly today?

Ready to go and on the way, Left Marshal AK. Tuesday Afternoon!

To late to beat the bum weather getting to Anchorage, Had 30 on the nose so stopped in Aniak to top off!! $385 dollars later (7.49) headed out, stayed low and had a few bumps and followed the Kusko river to Lime village and then tried to get thru Merrill Pass, got right up to the go-nogo corner and was snowing hard enough to not see all the way thru so backtracked and headed north up the west side of the AK Range.

Got to Rainy Pass and had 1 hour of light left, all my respect for the mountains and dark came together and turned left back to Mcgrath. Stayed over night at the very nice Hotel Mcgrath. Fueled up with $7.21 gas and left at noon on Wed and flew to Fairbanks as Anchorage is plugged up with the Pinapple Express for the next 3-4 days,(good thing I didn't make it) filled up with gas in Fairbanks $4.21 and headed to Tok AK. Will leave for Whitehorse in the AM

EAPIS all filled out for departure and arrival,!

Whitehorse and then Watson Lake and with luck on to Prince George for the night.
Will post some pics when able.

Re: Where did you fly today?

No ramp check, The guys at 40 Mile Air were heading out to catch some Caraboo's with a Supercub and an R44, I guess they call that work?? they were getting paid!
ChickenAir (the chicken guy with the cool Sportsman) Gave me a call, I passed his house about 200 miles before I got to Tok, had a pretty good conversation about airplanes????
Any way Left Tok this am ( got fuel and good bs from the folks at 40 Mile Air ) and headed direct to Whitehorse, getting close to tin city the ground was disappearing so dropped down and headed up the road?? Road disappeared??, had to turn around and go south a little ways and catch the Alsek River drainage, Came around the backside to Haines Junction, smooth sailing from there, Got customs, fuel, and a sandwitch, Then headed to Watson Lake, got to Jacky's corner and could see blue towards Prince George so changed destinations and climbed to 9500 and took advantage of a 20 mph tailwind and went direct, had enough gas so I am spending the night in Williams Lake tonight, Will be home tomorrow.

What a sweet ride the 195 is!

Re: Where did you fly today?

I had a road trip to Indiana this past week to pack up more of my dad's things and Uhaul them back here to Colorado. On the way back we stopped and stayed with friends in Kansas that own a BT-13 and an L-19. I got to go up this morning before hitting the road for some stick time in the L-19!

That is a cool plane! I flew in my buddys L-19 some years ago. Great plane with lots of room and awesome visibility. It was perfectly restored, too. I wish he still had it. (If I find some pictures of it, I'll post them).

It is a cool plane, I love the rockets! This plane has almost all the original radios and instruments installed and working. They've added in a small stack of a modern radio and transponder though. The visibility was awesome. It got off the ground very quickly too, I was kind of shocked.
