Rob, I also took my son to see the Spruce Goose about a week ago. Picked him up in Troutdale and went to McMinville from there. What a great museum. World class for sure. .....John

I am trying to decide on what time would be best for flying with you guys. My idea was to come up during the week to fly and stay thru the weekend. Don't know what your work schedule is like so we need to talk. How about I fly in on Thurs and stay Friday and Saturday to play. I understand I need to bring a tent to crash Saturday night, but Greg mentioned you had a cabin available. Feel free to call me 386-235-1447 or email [email protected] because I can check email on my iphone easier then getting online to BC.org. Looking forward to joining your group for some fun flying.

If your not living on the edge, you're taking up too much space.

Re: Where did you fly today?

Not much of a story, just my weekly route over Wright Patterson AFB and saw this parked there. O was in Ohio, but on the other end of the state. I figure this was the "decoy" you read about maybe???

Wherever O goes, there is always a backup plane nearby. An exact duplicate.

Flew Young Eagles this morning at Meadowlake, CO followed by hitting the fly-in down at Lajunta, CO. Yak Pak was there doing their show and John Melby doing some awesome aerobatics in his Pitts S-1-11B. Lots of cool old cars.

Re: Where did you fly today?

Made it out to Hood River. Late getting off the ground waiting for the fog to clear and clouds to lift. Discovered the tires were low so spent a bit of time getting those re-inflated. Wheel pants are a royal pain in the @$$!

Hoped to hit Hood River, Wasco, and Condin. Made Hood river and refueled. What a fantastic day once airborne. Even the east side turbulence wasn't too bad and the air pretty calm. For Hood river that's unusual. Started eastward towards Wasco when I noticed my GPS flashing a message: "Battery Low"... What's up with that? I have it plugged in. Hmmm, the charge light isn't on. For some reason it wasn't getting power from the "Cigar Lighter". Decided I was running late enough I'd head back to the west side rather than actually spend time resorting to pilotage and dead reckoning. It was fun just being up. Flew back to Camas, then over to Scappoose to refuel. Fairly quiet for Scappoose when I flew in. Trying to get out was another matter. The dinner bell must have been ringing or something as it was hard to find a big enough break in traffic to depart.

Back home, it was time to troubleshoot why I wasn't getting power to the GPS. The POH says there's a manual breaker on the back of the cigar lighter. Looking I wasn't finding any such breaker. I followed the wire to a fuse holder which contained a blown 2amp fuse. Must have been an "Upgrade" at some point. This got me wondering if a 2amp fuse is underkill for the circuit? I'm not going to put anything bigger than without knowing for certain. I have been very careful to unplug my GPS during startup and shutdown but I was leaving the adapter in the lighter. Perhaps I should be disconnecting from there instead?

Flew the Fall Colors Tour with the SC crowd. Flew over the northern Part of MN with a gaggle of approx. 40 planes. Had a great time and met new friends and reaquainted with old ones. Even had an old Howard attend. Sure love the sound of those radials. I don't know how to post photos so you'll just have to use your imagination. :)

Re: Where did you fly today?

After 4 years flying part time, Friday was my last day at Mile High Gliding. Great job and lots of fun, but it was just to far to drive and I would rather have the day off to fly the Stinson.

I'm posting pictures because I couldn't go to the Creede fly-in.

First of all I like the Pawnee snout in pic 1. The last picture looks a bit like an inverted white Tripacer to me... :)

Re: Where did you fly today?

Yesterday, actually....

Took a "non-standard airports" seminar at Pearson, KVUO (grass strips). They were careful to emphasize that it was NOT a mountain flying course. Good overview on things to look for, watch out for, & plan for when approaching any airport without a center line painted down the asphalt including some discussions on determining direction and velocity of winds at places without a wind sock.

After the ground lecture I flew out with an instructor to Daybreak, Cedars, and Brush Prairie. I hadn't been into Brush Prairie before so that was nice. He also pointed out a couple other uncharted strips in the area that I hadn't known about.
The 150 made it in and out of all the strips pushing the gross weight limits which, by the charts, it should have but still a pig to fly. Amazing how well it performed after losing a couple hundred pounds of meat.

Re: Where did you fly today?

What a wonderful weekend! So Saturday morning I took off just after sunrise from Colorado Springs to head to Leadville. I flew around Cheyenne Mountain and then went up to Leadville from the south. Had a great breakfast there, lots of planes too! I broke 100hrs logged on this leg.

Image
Image
Image

Then off to the south through Poncha Pass and overflew Mourning Shadows and entered the canyon to get to Creede. As I got into the canyon I was overcome with awe at the beauty and the fact that I was actually flying in a canyon with walls higher than I was flying and big rocks just off my wings. This has been the most amazing flying I've done myself so far.

Image
Image
Image

I was the only one there when I landed and I tied down and called Shortfielder who was over at Morning Shadows.

Image

Not to much later Shortfielder landed and picked me and my gear up to head to Morning Shadows, thanks Gary! A decision was made to go to the Hot Springs at Hooper, CO (http://www.sanddunespool.com/). The owner is a pilot and has a little dirt strip adjacent to the pool. We had 6 planes go over and everyone loved watching us land from the comfort of the warm water. I rode in Rob's Maule over to the Hot Springs, thanks Rob! We ate a great lunch (new hidden secret $100 hamburger spot now) and chilled at the pool.

Image
Image

Then back to Morning Shadows, this time in Bmurrish's 180, thanks Bill!

Image
Image

We all set up camp and enjoyed elk burgers, smoked salmon, venison filets, and cold beers from a brewery in Durango. Lots of great flying stories and lies around the campfire. Then I slept in my new tent and down bag and was quite warm even though it was no more than 29° overnight.

This morning packed all up and rode in Rob's Maule back over to Creede for the fly-in breakfast there, tons of planes. I didn't stay too long, they ran out of food by the time we got there and I was hungry. So I loaded up and flew above the river back out of the canyon (no pictures, too busy flying) and then buzzed Morning Shadows.

Flew over the Sand Dunes...wow, through Mosca Pass, and into Pueblo for fuel and lunch. Then home to Colorado Springs. 5.0hrs on the hobbs, and one of the best flying trips I've had yet!

Thanks again to Tom for putting on the Creede flyin and setting up the flyin at Lionel's place. I had a fantastic time and can't wait for a trip like that again....maybe in my own plane next time!
