Where did you fly today?

Did you fly somewhere cool, take photos, and feel like telling the tale to make us drool from the confines of our offices? Post them up!

Re: Where did you fly today?

ZPilot,
You found a real true clear day in Juneau to fly on? Awesome!

I went over to Goose bay Thursday, working on wheel landings, spent the afternoon wrenching on the plane, and went to Palmer yesterday to work more on wheel landings. The instructor now thinks I'm ready to safely commit aviation in my own plane - I think my wheel landings are utterly ugly, if functional, and plan one more flight with him today to knock a little more of the rough corners off. (Might as well grab all the experience that I can, while I can!) Thanks for the heads up - if we go to Willow, I'll bring cash for coffee and cinnamon buns!

No pics of Palmer - too busy flying - but here's one of Goose Bay while the CFI was demonstrating a wheel landing.

Re: Where did you fly today?

I held a mini campout on Friday night and Mush and Tony showed up. We had a great time despite the chilly winds and we'll have to have a repeat soon.

Weather has been crappy here in California. Wish I could fly in a week. Raining and record lows this weekend in the Central Valley.

Re: Where did you fly today?

No better here in Nevada. This was south of Gardnerville/Minden this afternoon.

And even shittier back at Carson City when landing. Sloppy approach with about 15 gusting 20 crosswind. Even more HUA flare into a so-called wheel landing. Balloon up at last second then sink, hit hard, then weather vane hard left into the wind and aim at the runway lights. F**king e ticket ride. Second time in my life I put a wheel off a runway.

Only luck I had was dumb luck and didn't break anything. Skill and experience were nowhere to be seen today. At least it was too shitty for anyone else to be out there to see it.

Log that one right in your "Experience" bag! On second bad bounce, I'm full power...saves a lot of headaches and likely lots of money and bandaids!

Re: Where did you fly today?

Oh, my "experience bag" is very big, and very full...

No bounce, and planted firmly. We just decided to try and run over runway lights. Only got one wheel off the runway, about a foot onto the gravel before I hauled her back. But, shouldn't have been there in the first place. Pure head up the ass sloppy.

I've been in some kind of slump ever since I got new engine in this thing. It's driving me nuts. It's like I've lost my feel.

After being down for installing a new starter, I went to the only airport that won't be ramp checked today - the FAA's "we're not evil! really!" annual pancake breakfast.

Re: Where did you fly today?

It was Palmer, AK (PAAQ) - sorry, forgot to mention that detail!

The first picture is of the glacier just after departing Palmer - I was too busy dealing with traffic and airplane to get any near the pattern. The second is passing by Chugiak, near Birchwood (BVC) on the way back to Merrill. The wind kept getting stronger while I was there - when I left, it was 16G22. You can see the dust being picked up by the wind coming off one glacier where it hits the air coming off the Knik Glacier in the background, by the jury strut. I decided against flightseeing, especially when I hit a few bumps that proved wearing the 4-point harness snug is a good idea.

Re: Where did you fly today?

Flew up to Cashmere to ride in the Apple Century road bike event this weekend. I love my 172 and it's big doors. With the front tire removed, I was able to throw the bike in back. Couldn't have asked for better, especially considering how crappy it's been of late. Only a two hours twenty minutes to get there on Friday with a stop in The Dalles for fuel and one hour 50 return Sunday. (disclaimer... does not count time getting two and from airport or prep time but it sounds a lot better!)

The flying was fantastic, the riding was hard. I don't know how the organizers did it, but they managed to make the route up hill both ways.

High flow through the Bonneville Dam. The Columbia is crazy high. Not as high as the Mississippi by any stretch but still close to flood stage. Walla-Walla park in Wenatchee was partially flooded along the banks.

We just finished the local king salmon derby today and I didn't win again, damn thing must be rigged  We turned in one fish that a seal grabbed and I chased it around with the boat till he finally let go, the king was a bit tattered, Head falling off, but still turned in for prizes.
