The bar/cafe was open this time, and it has great "ambience" and the biggest damn homemade wood stove I've ever seen, about 4' in diameter, I bet that takes the chill off pretty quick. Wish I had a picture of it.
I landed at Chamberlain for the day, mostly because it had water nearby and I had never been in there. At 4100' it was pretty tight but I pulled it off. I didn't see another soul the rest of day, which is the way I like it when going to the Frank, not counting the JC gathering of course!
Got smoky this AM, heading towards Mile Hi
And now, here it got interesting: flying the Middle Fork to the Main, and then hanging a right I made it the old strip that a buddy of mine used to own, and fly a Helio Courier out of. The last time I landed there was the late 80's in a Kitfox. Stan Potts is the current owner. The tree have gotten bigger, there are trailers and other stuff at both ends, and equipment parked on the runway. And it is short and gnarly to start with, (800' I think) I found it a much bigger challange then any of the more famous back country strips, what with the blocked approach and other obstructions, including a steel fence post I damn near hit. The narrow canyon was the least of the problems!
I believe it used to be called Colstrip. I never did see Stan, and still don't know if it is still in use or not, but as we had talked a while back and ended with "stop by sometime", I felt obligated. I called him later but got no answer, a pretty fun place with the right plane. I was going to stop at Mt. Coyote's new strip, but ran out of time and will stop by there next time.Tadpole wrote:I hate when I hit the wrong button and lose what I typed, haha.

If domestic aminals the owners ought not to let 'em out there-- that is an offical (state-owned) airport. If that was the case, you might think about contacting WS-DOT Aviation Div & giving them a heads-up.

No. They looked like horses, my first time over there so I was a bit higher than normal.

Unacceptable in town, and also unacceptable out in the boonies- maybe even more so. You definitely oughta contact the state airports supervisor at WS-DOT.
