Where did you fly today?

Did you fly somewhere cool, take photos, and feel like telling the tale to make us drool from the confines of our offices? Post them up!

Re: Where did you fly today?

Tried flying home today. Got 8 miles from the airport and oil started spraying up on my windscreen... turned around and got into a hangar. Pulled the cowling off to inspect. As far as I can tell, either the base O-ring on #6 blew out or the governor is leaking. Lost 2 quarts in 8 miles. Hoping to get it fixed tomorrow!

Bummer, but always nice when these things don't happen in the middle of nowhere!

Glad you and your plane made it safely down with damage to neither. Looks like if a seal was going to puke that was a good spot.

Re: Where did you fly today?

last Sunday at noon I decided to fly over to the John Day River. I made 2 stops the first at the Deschutes River strip, I got out and stretched my legs before heading for the John Day. Because of low clouds I had to go almost back to the Columbia River before turning east. I flew up from almost the mouth of the river to Chucker Flats landing on the gravel bar in front of the airstrip. I got out and stretched my legs again before heading home. When I left at noon the weather was pretty good in Troutdale but by the time I returned at 4:00 it was pretty marginal. It was almost 3 hours of flying total and 1 hour on the ground but it felt good to get out and do something.

Re: Where did you fly today?

Okay I will do that in the next few days, I have a lot of pictures of the build up and now that I have figured out how to post them. Thank you Zane for the video of that. I kept trying to figure it out on my own and I probably would have but I did a search on how to and found Zanes great video of it.

Re: Where did you fly today?

I didn't get on the ground much, but I did poke around the sky on a perfectly beautiful day. The Olympic Mountains don't offer any good landing spots. This is RUGGED terrain!

This first shot is the western edge of the Olympic Mountains in Washington State
Image

The center of this shot is Mount Olympus - I climbed that sucker 25 years ago. The 20+ mile hike to base camp with climbing and camping gear was almost as hard as the climb
Image

The white ribbon on the hillside is the road up to Hurricane Ridge
Image

This is Tatoosh Island, the northwestern corner of the continental US
Image

This shows Makah Bay and Shi Shi Beach - sweet spots on the Washington Coast - its all a wildlife refuge, so gotta stay high.
Image

and this is Mount Baker on the way home. What a day, even if it did end on concrete...

Seems like the days I have commitments the weather is beautiful.

Here are a couple of photos from a flight on Boxing day with a 3500-4000 overcast

Explored lake ice conditions with Ben New Year's Eve. His wife let us go play with the Cub this afternoon as long as we took pics of the ski hill she works for. :D

Re: Where did you fly today?

Colors reflected off the ice last night heading down Gull. -4F and not a bump in the sky. Only took the iPhone with me, not thinking about taking pics. So missed some good stuff, oh well...

Took a guy up who hadn't flown since 2007. He enjoyed getting back in the saddle, landing on the lakes etc.

Re: Where did you fly today?

Nothing big by BCP standards, but flew 1.2 hrs in a new to me rental straight Cessna 172. I've flown a fair amount in a C172, but it's always been later models, with electric flaps, and the O-320 Lycoming. This is my first time behind a Continental O-300. It was nice to get above the Boise/Treasure Valley inversion. It's amazing how you don't even notice the inversion when you're on the ground, but when you get near or above the layer and it is painfully obvious. A beautiful day to hit Caldwell (EUL) and Emmett (S78).

Re: Where did you fly today?

Flew from Austin area with the GF up to Taos on Saturday. Was one of the top three roughest rides ever, XC anyway. For last hour n half were cruising between 85-95mph getting a thorough ass whippin the whole time. Kate being a newbie pilot this was a good trip for her to experience and I think she learned a lot about mountains and high winds, wind shear etc. She didn't turn green and we made it, starting to dump now and skiing is great, woohoo!!!
