Re: Where did you fly today?

Is that the new Garmin G5? So they are being delivered now.
Looks really good-- how do you like flying with it?
And just as importantly, how did you document the installation?
I had an IA friend ready to sign off on one for me as a minor alteration, but then he back-peddled.
I guess his take is that if the G5 causes problems with the pitot/static system, it could cause erroneous airspeed and altimeter readings.
I downloaded and read the G5 user's manual, it seems pretty busy with a lot of connections. My impression is that it was designed to interface with all the other Garmin EFIS stuff, and that it's use as a stand-alone Electronic Flight Display was just kind of an afterthought.
I've kinda gone back to the idea of just getting a Dynon D2, and hardwiring it in.
Think I'll wait and see what happens with EFIS / EFD installation regs in the next year or so.

Re: Where did you fly today?

Fantastic photos BRD! If you can't be there doing it in person the next best thing are your pictures!

A side note. I guess this would be a good time to bring this up for everyone's benefit since there is such a great example in one of the pictures.

I noticed the seat belt on your pax was riding up high. This is not good, she would be severely injured by this in the event of "sudden stoppage". May I suggest a 5th point or crotch strap. If 5th point is not possible then everyone make sure lap belts are tightened before shoulder straps. Pre flight your pax and make sure their belts are properly secure, I have seen this with a lot of people I have given rides to and have to make the corrections more often than not.

Re: Where did you fly today?

I was just thinking about that Kurt, I don't know if a 5 point is possible in a certified Cub, but yes, tighten the belt!

Once again BRD, I LOVE your pictures! I really like seeing smiling faces on pax faces, that just validates the fun!

Curious, what is the name of the lake or area up der in da Scan da hooovian state are you flying?

"Uff-Da" Kurt... :D

This is the Brainerd lakes area. (KBRD, 9Y2, 8MN3, KPWC & KAIT are the strips we use the most for wheel planes)

I keep the Cub on the Gull chain. There are a zillion lakes from here to the border, so just about anywhere you want to go, you can go. Just depends how much time and gas you got. Or if the daily thunderstorm is rolling through... 8)

Re: Where did you fly today?

Picked up Mary's rebuilt Cub in Anoka last night. Airplane has a new fuselage, seats, extended baggage etc etc... really feels solid and the Borer/O-320 combo is smooth as as butter (at least for a 4 banger Lyc).

20 mph headwinds, so daylight faded away... (and only had iPhone)

No one else on the field moving around. I have never been there before so I can't comment to whether it has changed. I'm looking forward to going back to camp once the weather cools though.

Tested out the new Go Pro on the way out to the Thiefneck fly in this weekend. Wanted to get some shots down the flight line but was too busy entertaining!

Re: Where did you fly today?

Didn't do the Jackson side of the Tetons. Instead we headed to the west side and landed at KDIJ - Driggs, ID and had lunch at the Warbird Café. Flew the Snake River back to Ririe then pointed the nose south for home. All in all a pretty good day.

Re: Where did you fly today?

Coming back from Plains MT, after staying the night in Twin Bridges (best pilot's lounge ever.....not real fancy but just right, killer view from the picnic table in front, quiet, short bike ride to town OR the big bomber courtesy car, with the keys in the ash tray, classic small town Montana airport hospitality and common sense in this post 911, world), MUCH APPRECIATED!

Full fuel, dead calm winds, absolutely perfect blue skies, and a 5:30 AM launch, it just doesn't get any better then that. And my very loose flight route home (make that extremely loose) would take me over some of the best scenery in Idaho and Montana.

Gravelly Range (spelling correct, google it) I want to drive it sometime plus ride it with my e bike, but for now just have to make do flying it low level. The road was still gated shut, so I could really cut loose as I had it all to myself. I was at 8850' when I took this pic, to give an idea of how high it is up there. I flew it 50/50......50 mph ind. and about 50' high most of the way, and lot lower some places, the S-7S excels at this even at this altitude and to an old ultralight pilot I'm comfortable there. Then West Jellystone and a quick (thanks to the folding e bike) ride into town for breakfast and a ride around town to look at all the tourists. Back at the plane I had what was probably an actionable event:I exposed myself to a female ramp worker   #-o

A 180 had just landed, and while it was taxing in to one side of me, I saw her in the electric golf cart ride over to the same side he was at. I took the opportunity to quickly "drain the sump" on the opposite side of my plane. BUT, while the equipment was still hanging out, silently (damn silent electric vehicles, especially with a 180 nearby) she appears about 40' away. There was no question she got an eye full, such as it is. Lots of coffee beforehand, a noisy big engined airplane, a totally silent but fast moving golf cart, with a female on it, and a 2+ hour flight ahead all combined to allow this to happen. "That's my story, Judge, and I'm sticking to it!"

Re: Where did you fly today?

courierguy,

Did you happen to notice what kind of shape that road is in on Gravelly Ridge? There is supposed to be a campground up there that looks like it might be landable according to GE. I always thought it might be a nice destination in the dead of summer or a stopping point on the way to somewhere else.

Re: Where did you fly today?

The road is in fine shape, fairly narrow though with high banks. The surrounding terrain looks good, closer inspection shows random rock big enough to be a problem for even big tires, so keep your eyeballs peeled, I did
