Nice, we load up wall tents and 4 wheelers and head for the hills over new years. To much moisture in the air this year though.

From CHD to FUL

From Chandler, AZ (CHD) to Fullerton, CA (FUL)

I talk a little about this flight here:
http://www.backcountrypilot.org/forum/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=3353

we rented a 172 and I still need to build hours for my commercial and this is the longest flight I've been on. I was really fun especially through the banning pass.

Hey Trevdog,

Too bad you didn't stay through the weekend or didn't get in touch. I've been parked at Fullerton for over a week now. Oh well, sounds like you had a great trip.

Hailey

Flew BFI to SUN to SSI yesterday. It was beautiful in Hailey but bitter cold with an unmentionable wind chill factor. Flew over lots of avalanche damage. What a winter. Sitting in GSO today....nice and warm.

If your not living on the edge, you're taking up too much space.

After heading to the airport, I ended up spending too much time with my hangar neighbor, who is finishing up building a Van's RV8.

So, being that time was limited I ended up just flying locally but man was it gorgeous out. Smooth as can be. All that was missing was my recliner!

Good day to have a seaplane.........

Not exactly backcountry, but I flew out of Kelso today and went up to check out the flooding in the Chehalis area. I wasn' t the only one, everyone and their dog along with a few news choppers were overflying the new lake.

Snapped a few pics, and then headed for less crowded skies. Flew to Toledo (TDO) for a few touch and go's and then went back to Kelso.

The north end of the Chehalis runway was under water, but it looked like most of the hangers were dry today. Doesnt look that dry yesterday though!

I patrolled the flooded Snoqualmie River amd Snohomish River areas today. Pretty wet alright. Saw alot of airplanes pulled up on high ground, and another one or two that weren't so lucky. Bummer. Bad show for all the people whose homes etc were flooded out, hope they all get dried out soon.

BFR Done (saturday)!!! Good for another two years.

The oral review went better than I was expecting. He didn't stump me on a single question so he, obviously, wasn't asking the right questions. Of course he did ask if there was anything I had questions about... if I knew what I didn't know I'd be able to ask!

Quite a few clouds but the air was smooth. Spent a lot of time under the foggles listening to the right seat "ATC" give altitudes and headings. Got quite a few compliments on my instruments skills and encouragement to go for the ticket. He's not a CFII so I can't chalk that up to trying to sell me more time. I think, at this time, I'd rather save my pennies for an airplane upgrade. Still not sure it would be worth it anyway. It is fun though. May have to see how Rob B. likes his.

Unfortunately the clouds did limit what we were able to do. He did keep complementing the parts I did do so, either my skills are better than I think or I need a new CFI. Obviously I need a new instructor.

IFR training

Still pluggn away on the IFR training. It has been 4 weeks since my last lesson. I guess the wx has been bad. Flew my first actual IMC today. Boy those clouds will screw you up.

KTTD to KAST and back. OVC 1200 departing KTTD. OVC 1400 Arrival KAST. CLR when we got back to KTTD.

More IFR training tomorrow, Friday, Saturday. I think Saturday we will do the long cross country.

Cheers...Rob

Flew to GXY to have lunch with Super Cat at the Barnstormer. Super cat and I flew back to SNY together. Just a nice day ( winds were less than 20 knots) to fly.

The faster I go , the farther behind I get.

Engine test flight

Actually two days ago. I went for a 1.1 hour test flight around the Kittitas valley after putting my engine back together.

Flying in January in Eastern Washington is usually limited for me do to fog in the valley. For that reason, a couple weeks ago I was going to "Fog" the engine crankcase in my kitfox so it could sit without being run for the next month or so and not rust.

The fogging oil can has a plastic extension tube like a lot of spray lubricant cans have. The intake manifolds on a two stroke engine dump the fuel and air directly into the crankcase. The instructions from Rotax are to spray the fogging oil into the carbs with the engine running, or if you are afraid of the spinning prop, spray it in there with the engine off, then start it and let it run about 10 seconds.

The front carb is about six inches from the prop so I chose option #two. That was a good thing because as soon as I pressed the spray button the extension tube on the fogging oil can shot off the nozzel and straight down into the crankcase.

The weather forecast this week has been for fog every day, but we have had clear skys every day with temperature as high as 60 F on Wednesday. Instead of flying I was removing a cylinder to get that darn spray tube out of the crankcase. I finally got it back together Thursday afternoon and the sky was still crear.

The Air was Silky smooth and the visability was unlimited. The fog is here now so I can retorque the head bolts and fog the crankcase without using that tube on the can.

Up the canyon behind my house.

Great pictures.

I got to fly nowhere. First I got sick. But look at this wind. It is more than I can handle. Our weather is severe clear now. Tomorrow is my long IFR cross country. Hope the winds let up.

Ya, Gusting to 48 pretty much day and night all weekend.

My wife, daughter and I took our PA 22/20 160 up to visit friends in camas WA. this weekend. We left Bandon OR friday about 2pm and had a beautiful flight up the coast as the valley was IFR up to just north of Salem. The briefers had told me about Troutdales winds but I did not think much of it as friday it was in the 20's and after all, it is Troutdale. We landed at Grove field in Camas, just north of TTD. The turbulence started as we approached the Goerge but was not too bad and we had a uneventful landing at Grove.
I was hoping to take our friends flying Sat. but the winds never went below 30 on Sat. Sat. evening just before dark I took the Pacer around the patch and took a severe beating......Thankful to be on the ground. Guess it hadn't died down......

This morning I left Grove and from about 500ft. to 3500ft. it was severe turbulence. I was glad my Parents offered to take my wife and daughter down to Aurora so I could pick them up there and they would not have to experience the Turbulence during the climb. Portland approach was kind enough to give me clearence to climb into their airspace to get above the surface winds. Once up to 3500ft it smoothed out to light chop.

Picked up the rest of the family at Aurora and we had a nice trip back down the coast. Did a quick landing/takeoff at Wakonda Beach. A little wet and water on both sides of the runway but was in great shape otherwise.

Chased a few ATV's through the dunes on the way south and watched a beautiful sunset into the ocean just as we landed at Bandon.

I guess you can't be too picky for flying weather in Jan.
