Carb ice? close call.

IT appears there may be an exciting story to go along with that photo?

My wings are only 2 years old and I do not want to self incriminate myself with a photo.
I am not sure where that line is? I do not fly in a reckless manner as far as I am concerned but.....
Had to be carb ice.

I had an interesting afternoon aviation adventure today. Went to see why it took so long for my buddy's Lauren and Jim to replace a throttle cable on the cherokee. Anyways, ended up catching up with friends, meeting new ones and doing some hangar flying.

After airing up the struts and fueling up the old bird, we ended up going to (MKS) Berkeley County. Although it was chilly, Lauren, Jim and I did the Unthinkable ( oooooh) Yup, we used a county provided hose and faucet to do a quick wash of Laurens beloved Cherokee 140, without so much as buying any fuel. Man that thing had some mildew growing on it!

Well, we sucessfully got the job done in short order. Then we were on our way, A quick 10 min jaunt back to Charleston International. Lauren was nice enough, (brave enough too) to let me shoot some touch and go landings from the RIGHT seat, in a unfamiliar airplane. The landing(s) may not have been so beautiful, but the visibility was awesome and the sun-set was beautiful!I was handicapped a bit, but Hey i didnt kill us. Not my usual performance, but hey it was fun and challenging! I'll take it anyday, twice on Sunday.

Well thats what its all about, Fun, Friends and Flying!

Caught by Oldman Weather... Again

Greg and I got jammed up in the snow that came three hours early and had to 'hole up for the night.

Greg,
Really cool video's. Almost like I was therer, but didnt have to suffer through the -10 temps! Liked the Cessna 150 bush pilot. I fly an almost stock 1973 C-150L. Its got flap gap seals a new prop and cylnders. Its not bad with 1 person and half fuel for short fields. That guy was luck to have gotten out, even with all that work.

Did the flying portion of my BFR today in the FBO's Citabria. I thought it would be a good lesson that could pay off for up set recovery.
NO THANKS boys. After 20 minutes of rolls, loops, hammer heads, etc. I was ready for some landings.
Tied down the plane with the needle at 3.8 G's.
I Know that is nothing to some pilots (hell the old stinson is rated for that).
BUT, I grew up in the woods logging and then heavy construction, I have seen alot of things break that you wouldn't think would break. I can't tell you how many times wings went through my mind!
I'm good on upside down for a while. :D

That's interesting to read, as I just signed up for the same treatment, for pretty much the same reasons. That's three weeks away yet. I'll let you know how it goes.

Every thing has its breaking point, I don't care what the book says (we are talking used airplanes here). The best thing I could have done is a 6 G maneuver at the beginning and I would not have worried about 4 G's
My CFI did the first loop and then ask me to do one, I ask him if he was sure the wings would stay on and he just laughed.
I practice slow flight, landing short, hitting a mark, grabbing a hand full of flaps and horsing it off the ground. I learned a hole new aspect of flying today, humbling.

Tried to get into McKenzie Bridge State today, to much snow for me

Image

Went on to Oakridge Sate, nobody around. It is paved but a neat strip. From there to Lebanon for fuel. They are working on a 182 with 3 curled blades from an Idaho mishap. Bummer deal the motor had 5 hours on it. :(

With questionable weather reports down valley, I decided to head to Newhalem Bay (3S7) and soak my toes in the water before flying up the coast to Cannon beach and back.

Cape Falcon (or thereabouts).

Waves crashing.

Very little turbulance and calm except flying just off shore. There must have been just enough breeze coming in off the water and hitting the cliffs along the shore. Great day to be out.

Life is good. Life is better with wings.

I didn't fly. BUT!!! I did have the opportunity to watch my hangar neighbor roll out his RV 7 for its' first flight! Six long years it took him to get to this day. Talk about a labor of love. I'll never forget the proud smile on his face. And yes, all went perfectly.

This was the first time I've seen an experimental's maiden voyage. Was thrilling for me - I can't imagine how it was for him. I'm sure he had some sweet dreams last night. :)

Flying a experimental plane that you built for the first time is a life changing moment..... Trust me on that ...

The Everglades

The weather was great and we got back to Williston FL just before "BEER 30". Our trip had some bumpy conditions and a good dose of crosswind on arrival, but we all had a great time. I will try to get some photos posted soon. The strip we visited in the Everglades was just south of the Big Cypress Seminole Indian Res. along the canal. It is the kind of strip that if you don't get a visual angle looking down the runway you will NEVER find it. On downwind you cannot see the runway. It has a couple dead trees poking out above the rest on the final approach that can get your attention. The crosswind was 15 knots above the tree line but calm as glass once you dipped below the turbulence cap in the tree line. Once you are on the ground it doesn't look too tough but at 50mph it comes at you fast. We did a buggy ride in the swamp and had a wonderful cook out and the best part of all was no aircraft was harmed during the making of this great memory.

Sorry you didn't make it Dick. We ended up with 3 Highlanders, 2 Kitfox and an M6 not counting the folks that drove.

If your not living on the edge, you're taking up too much space.

Spent a day flying the Four corners area and hiked the ruins at Hovenweep Utah. As usual I had a blast.

Awesome flight up to Sindey with HiCountry, Dan, and Gerald. Then a 3-ship back to Front Range. Need to go back up when I can spend a couple hours at Cabelas. HiC, tell Ed we're sorry for drooling all over his hangar floor looking at the brand new American Champion Aircraft he has for sale.
