I took this photo before trying the cowl for clearance. It didn't clear so they are flipped as well.
Was hoping it would fit as it complicates the rear baffles and oil filler neck :([/quote]

Yes, it does complicate those things. But its better than external bumps. And there isn't much room on the top of the engine for the air filter either.

Happy to send some pics if you want to see what we did. (nowhere near as clean as yours)

The other clearance issue was the nosebowl just bumping the forward cross member on the engine mount.

Cheers,

Pete

Would love to see photos of your install !

I’m making blisters for the aft baffle to clear the intakes. The cowling needs a LOT of work anyway but it does clear the mount by 1/4 inch, luckily.
The STC calls out a cut wedge for the air filter that I still need. As it stands, the filter interferes by 1/2 inch with the cowl. ...one thing at a time.

Re: (Yet Another) Cessna 170 project

I thought I'd post an update.
Earlier in the year, I left my job (for several reasons) to focus on and finish the 170 project. It also freed Daniela and I us to take a few road trips. I highly recommend the Cabot Trail in a convertible.
Image

On the project, with the motor in place I was able to finish the cowling based on DER work from a year ago.
This was a tremendous learning experience. Not just for the DER interaction...
Image

With the cowl out of the way, baffles were in order. THIS was some seriously tedious work and I lost count of how many times I screwed, unscrewed, cut, filed and threw away to make it again. Really, I could spend all day making a part only to throw it away and make it agin the next day. Even with drawings and photos, the baffles were the worst for me.
But, they are behind me.
Image

In the middle of the baffles, I started to route Throttle, Prop, Mixture cables. thats when I discovered, my holes were wrong and I needed a solution. Like a dress plate to cover up my mistakes. It ended up well enough but, this was nights of little sleep in the making.
Image

Next up, finish the wiring. Namely, the engine monitor. More indecision :)

Wings are re-skinned and waiting for paint. Tanks are in the works.
The punch list is short and, if I can keep pushing, she should be flying by spring.

For now, I'm going out into the garage to drink a beer.

Alexa, make some airplane noises.

Enjoy that beer! You earned it.

Baffles are crappy to fit in the best of situations. I can only imagine how much harder it is when you’re off book, like you are.

Love the pic of the cleco porcupine cowling.

The whole thing is looking great. [emoji16]

Man this is looking great. The transformation is really amazing to see. I'm sure the process is very frustrating as it happens and the long nights, head scratching and repeats make you questions yourself at times, but don't. You are turning out an awesome product and when its finished, it will be worth it. Keep it going!

On a more technical sidenote, does an A&P have to sign off on all this work you're doing along the way, or at the end? I've read alot of the resto-threads and always wondered how this worked with owner's doing alot of the heavy lifting.

All of the work needs to be done by or supervised by an A&P per the FAR. You can either make log entries along the way or save everything until the end to make one big entry covering everything but that's more up to the person signing the book. We're keeping track of everything in several binders with a running list of what's been done, what needs 337s... and will make comprehensive entries that will bring the aircraft back into service but thats just one way.
The binders also serve to track my hours on the project to go towards my A&P ticket.

Looks great! Building baffles from scratch isn't fun.

I'm looking forward to seeing how you arranged the oil fill tube. Please figure it out by next week so I can copy it.[emoji16]

You mean this wonky thing? It keeps things on one side of the baffle but still needs a blister on the baffle to clear.

I'm hoping to talk to AWI about welding something up soon.

What does the standard TCM filler neck look like for that intake configuration?

There isn't one. The STC to put this motor on permits you to reverse the intakes to better clear the cowling but doesn't detail how to resolve the filler neck interference. Most people turn it to poke thru the rear baffle in a less then elegant fashion. My goal is to keep it on one side of the baffle next to the dipstick so they an both be accessed via a small oil door.

Hmmm.... If it were me, it would just be one logbook entry:

"R&R everything. Functional flight test performed successfully by owner."

Re: (Yet Another) Cessna 170 project

She's out of the garage. So, that's good...

Not many posts lately but everything is done except for polishing the wings and figuring out how things go back together.

Things were a touch too wide for the Uhaul door so this was a last minute solution.
ended up being a not so good idea.

No damage to the gear boxes but it caused a 2 hour delay in off loading as we beat the wheels straight again.
It's cut down 172 legs to move the thing around the shop easier.
