Re: Where did you fly today?

The rhime ice covered top is called the "pearly gates". And the saddle coming from the pearly gates down to illumination rock in the foreground is called the "hogsback" I almost didn't recognize it without the trademark train of 45 Mazamas.

I spent more than my share of time on hood and hiking around looking for climbable rock in the PNW. There isn't much - or you wouldn't call youself "choostronaut". And I was pummeled more than once - but the last time I was hit in the chest with a basketball size rock tumbling down the gully I was bushwacking up. No mas para me. [-X

Now I live in the land of milk, honey, and dakota sandstone: BOCO. Boo Ya, baby!

I would love to have a fly-in climb-out... as long as it's warm and sunny. 8)

Nice! Yeah there was a nice pile of Mazamas at the base of the hogsback yesterday... However I was actually at the Mazamas headquarters prior to taking these pictures, having lunch with a very prolific member of said group, telling him how much I hate the Mazamas and how the ruined my work this past weekend... So he gave me a Mazamas pin and put a picture of some silly FA a friend and I did up on the wall in their gym... hmmmm? I'll be in Boulder next Sunday through Thursday... maybe grab a beer? Or show me how its done flying in CO? Would love to here some stories about lookin' for rock in Oregon.... I wasted 10 years of my life driving around looking for stuff that I couldn't see, then I got my pilots license and well compressed those 10 years into about 3 hours of flying!

Yeah those are awesome! If they where closer to a population center they would be plastered with routes.

Re: Where did you fly today?

Nothing much, just a local area general maintenance flight and a few pics snapped at the end...

But it's something!

We could see Denali just peeking out to the Southwest. Just barely though, wouldn't show up on the iphone camera.

Re: Where did you fly today?

Took a little flight this morning, meandered my way over to Paso Robles. On the way back found a nice spot to put down next to the river. It was a nice open spot, but had a bunch of dried up twigs sticking out of the ground everywhere, luckily there was a nice long stretch into the wind, stick free.

Took a little walk toward the river behind the trees. Almost made it but ran into a few wild hogs and decided to get the hell outta there

Image

Sticks everywhere! Walked around my immediate takeoff area and got rid of some of them to give me a little more room.

Re: Where did you fly today?

Are the hogs aggressive? I used to hear a lot about hog-hunting but never did any before I left California.
Maybe you're lucky a pack of them didn't attack your airplane. #-o
How much duct tape do you carry with you?

They're mostly not aggressive, but if you get them in a corner they can be viscious. They can kill a dog no problem....Some of them are BIG!! I've never hunted them, but plenty around here do, and I've heard the stories. I need to get me a nice rifle for hog hunting, when you have an airplane, it takes the guess work out of finding them

I heard worse when I was young. I don't know if someone was yanking my chain or what but the story went that gangs of super sized wild hogs with tusks the size of samurai swords would roam the wood practicing human predation. They would use there weight and tusks to throw the victim to the ground ,then slide underneath the body and with there razor backs cut you up into bite sized pieces. A frightening scenario, but I'm sure slightly exaggerated.

Re: Where did you fly today?

I'm sure that they can tear your ass up if they take the notion to. Like any wild or feral critter, they are no doubt unpredictable and constantly subject to "fight or flight" response.
Bart, better check your state game laws-- some states, including Washington, prohibit same-day flying and hunting to prevent aerial game spotting.
Years ago, I bought a pretty good book about pig hunting, written by a guy who wrote for one of the big hunting magazines. You might wanna check it out if you can find a copy.

I'm not sure about the same day law in California but I know that when I left the limit was 1 per day and 1 in possession with a 365 day "season". I somehow doubt that it's gotten more restrictive. I'll bet a couple bucks that the owner of the ranch wouldn't mind "neutralizing" a few hundred.

Re: Where did you fly today?

The main reason I never gave hog hnting a try was that almost all of it takes place on rivate lands. Most places charge a trespass fee or require you hire their guide- either a hired hand or else someone who's leased the hunting privileges on the land in question.

Re: Where did you fly today?

A local who used to fly a powered parachute (before he got hooked up with a ball and chain), had me set his new home trusses with the crane, and I of course eyeballed the property for landing sites. Some scattered irrigation ditches and the standing water made it a bit more interesting then at first glance, but it went great. They were working on the roof and were surprised when I walked up, they didn't hear my earlier fly over and subsequent landing and taxi, I guess the plane is pretty quiet  Image Image This kid did all the excavation for my new crane building, so it was a chance for me to get even with the crane bill! He'll get copies of these pics also of course.

Then as long as I was up I flew the 65 miles to Afton for breakfast, where my waitress was young, cute, and had a real personality. I think I reminded her of her father, or maybe her grandfather #-o Anyway, on the way out she said "wow, so you just get to fly away!" "Yeah," I said, "it's like having a super power!" She needs to go for a ride sometime.

So, rather then trust the GPS to get me home, I decided to follow the Greys River up the Star Valley, where it ties into the Snake. I spotted a new little hangar going up at a grass airstrip, a modest little endevour with some equeally modest cabins  Image
Then, as long as I was flying by, I had to make the obligatory gravel bar landing by the waterfall. I landed the skinney part in the center. A large tree snag on the end on takeoff made it a little tight, but had some good wind and that helped get me over it.ImageImage

Then another 50 miles brought me to the jobsite that made me miss Cave Man, I worked 16 hrs, until midnight, (when I should have been flying to Moab that day) setting this 300 horse pump motor. The pump crew uses my crane for their heavier pumps, and it is always an emergency, something about making hay while the sun shines. I asked the old boy who runs the operation if any planes had ever landed in the field, he gave me a blank look and didn't respond. I took this for permission to do so, he'll be getting an overhead pic of the entire operation also. Pretty amazing how much water these big ag pivot lines put out, what was a dustbowl the day before was all nice and moist, and I figured I earned about 100 hrs worth of mogas for more flying so that made me feel better about missing Cave Man, sort of.
