Re: Grassstrippilot's Flying Adventures

Yesterday was one of those stellar days that made it a shame to put the plane away. I did a quick run to Idaho for some fuel. I tried out a new camera position and an inverter for charging stuff enroute. Both seem to work great!

That's a good camera position. How was it mounted?

Re: Grassstrippilot's Flying Adventures

It's a Drift base counter sunk so the camera can still slide in. Then I just used an existing screw from the plexiglass cover for my wingtip light. A little jello effect at certain RPMs but pretty good.

Re: Grassstrippilot's Flying Adventures

Today marked the one year anniversary of buying my plane and making all right in my universe again. It's been a good year. So I thought it only fitting that I go fly, get some dirt on the tires, and try out another spot to mount the camera. I think it worked out well!

Re: Grassstrippilot's Flying Adventures

What a great week! I got to go fly three times and the weather has been awesome all week! Friday, I flew the kids to Idaho to spend a few nights with Grandpa and Grandma while Dee ran a race. On the way back, stopped in one of the local strips to get some footage and check the camera battery before going to see if I could find Dee on her race. I've always loved watching the silhouette of an aircraft from the air, especially when it's from an airplane I'm flying. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that I had caught some good footage of my shadow.

That she is! By the time I flew over, she was about 40 miles in. A few hours after landing I joined her to run through the night and part of the next day.

Re: Grassstrippilot's Flying Adventures

I'm a little late posting this but a few weeks ago was spring break and we flew the kids to Vegas to see a magic show, Hoover Dam, Red Rock Canyon, then we flew over to the Grand Canyon to see the south rime before heading home. It was a great trip. 8.5 hours in all.

Big storms near Vegas. We had to wait it out for a while at Perkins Field.

Angry skies.

Vegas. Great service again at Henderson!

Re: Grassstrippilot's Flying Adventures

Well, between getting the plane ready for our Alaska trip and everything else going on, I somehow let just over a month go without flying. No good! So today was a "must fly" day. Luckily, we had beautiful weather and Allen and Stan were up for meeting at Cedar Mountain for a picnic. We met a nice guy there that just got into backcountry flying this spring and just bought a Bearhawk a few weeks ago. Beautiful plane. He was there with his two sons. We ate, talked planes, watched Adam fly his drone, and shot my new shotgun. A fun afternoon.

I love your pictures and stories! The family aspect of it is what makes it so great, thanks for posting.

Is that blue and white plane a Bearhawk with a 185 tail and stinger?

Thanks, I saw the short legs and thought it might be a Bearhawk.

Re: Grassstrippilot's Flying Adventures

Well, now that the Alaska trip is done, time to get back to updating this thread.

I had a friend text me last week asking if I could talk to a young man that wants to fly for the airlines. He has his private license. So, we went for a little flight this morning over the mountains north of Ogden, Utah and then headed out to get the tires a little dirty. Needless to say, he thought it was pretty cool!

Re: Grassstrippilot's Flying Adventures

Yesterday's mission? Operation "No Dog Left Behind!" He kids went to Idaho Wednesday to spend the night with grandma. Tyler ended up leaving his beloved One Eye puppy. When we met up with them Thursday afternoon, he realized he didn't have him and big crocodile tears ensued. So, after bribing him with a few other things he agreed he could wait a day.

The next morning, Adam and I launched to Idaho to retrieve his friend's. It's a perfectly legit reason to burn $100+ an hour, right!?!? I was going flying anyway! It ended up being a beautiful morning. After the pick up we flew over Bear Lake, Logan Canyon, and the backside of the Wasatch. We got back just before it clouded up and scattered showers moved through. Overall a good morning of flying. I also got a good Gami Spread test done and found that my #6 has been the warmest because it has been near peak EGT.

Me and my copilot.
