Is that Sprocket?
Poor old thing, it looks like he came out on the short end of a bar fight!

Nope. That's One Eye. (Yes my kids are very original with their names.) This is Tyler's, which is the same stuffed animal as Sprocket. It got its name after Tyler, as a toddler, used to crawl around with it in his mouth. He would use the eye as the thing to bite for some grip. Until it eventually came off and the name One Eye was born! He actually looks pretty good. Poor Sprocket is really looking rough. Lots of miles on that old dog!

Hehe! Moving target! That would be fun but I don't think that would go over well with Adam!

Today's adventure: run 19 miles with Dee on her 35 miles race. Then run to Idaho to pick the kids up from Idaho.

Grassstrippilot's Flying Adventures

Eclipse 2017!

Dee had a 55K (35 mile race) on Saturday (I paced her for 19 of it) so we couldn't leave until Sunday morning. We met up with a FB friend in his 206 in Gooding for fuel, then into Warm Springs. I think it was one of the eclipse best kept secrets. We opted for it because it had water, bathrooms, hot springs and...most importantly, was one of the closest to the center or totality. As a bonus, we saw lots of BCP friends there. Rob and Staci were there with their kids and we camped with them and our 206 friend Nick and his two kids. The kids had a blast playing with each other. We went down to the hot springs and the kids loved it too. I though the springs might be super busy, but it wasn't bad. In all I think there were 27 airplanes, but they were spread out and you could see most of them with the bow in the runway. So it felt like 8-10. The only down side was a Bonanza that landed long and over ran into the trees the day before we got there. Luckily just scratches and bruises.

The eclipse was awesome. Honestly I still can't put words to it. Breath taking, brilliant, moving, spiritual...like I said before, I didn't expect the temp to drop so fast or so low, I didn't expect it to get so dark, and I didn't expect the corona to be so brilliant. Or the diamond ring! One of the coolest experiences of my life. Amazing.

And the icing on the cake? Dee's FB comment:

"Flew to a grass runway in Idaho for the eclipse. Before we went, I wasn't sure 100% totality was worth the effort. I was 100% WRONG. It was absolutely incredible. Very glad we made the trip."

I was insistent about getting as close as we could. She was apprehensive about the crowds and number of planes. Ends up both were non-issues like I thought they would be and it was a home run family outing. What a great way to end the summer!

Thick traffic on the way home in northern Utah. From what I heard on the news, it only got worse as the night went on. It was bad enough getting home from the airport! Glad we missed the mess on the ground!

Cory, you and Dee are doing a fantastic job raising your kids. They are blessed to have you guys as parents. Be neat to see what they've become in 15-20 years.

Thanks for the kind words Phil. I sure hope so. Like some of the sayings go...you only get one shot at it and there is no instruction book. I know it will be years before they get how good they have it. I think they are a bit camped out for this summer though. I, on the other hand, would like to do more. I love being out with the family. Oh well, it's been a great summer!

He was put out because "he was hungry" and we wouldn't feed him...right now! He's always hungry. I can't tell you how many times we heard that on our AK trip!

Re: Grassstrippilot's Flying Adventures

Yesterday's adventure: flying to a private island to show some friends where Kit Carson's Cross is. Last week a friend who has permission to land out there texted me and asked if I'd show them. So, I called Allen Macbean and Stan Macbean to see if they wanted to come along. By the time we all landed, the calm winds turned into 15-20 knots. Out of an abundance of caution, we walked the tail draggers down the hill where the strong quartering tailwind would have been. For once it was an advantage to have a nose wheel! Even though the winds kept the flying to a minimum, it was still a fun morning.

Re: Grassstrippilot's Flying Adventures

What is that tan airplane?
Thought at first it was a modified Pacer,
with tricked out wings and a SC cowl arrangement,
then noticed the single wing struts.

Re: Grassstrippilot's Flying Adventures

For some time I've wanted to check out Escalante. So we made a quick 24 hour trip to go camp and do some hiking. Very cool area and I want to go back to do some more exploring. The RAF and the city did a great job on the facilities down there.

Right after landed and parked, I watched a guy wreck his RV-4. Quartering tailwind about 10-15 knots. Hot. He saw it was going south (long and fast), executed a go-around. I heard the engine rev, plane pitched up, one pop like a backfire, then I heard the engine lose power. Three bounces, first on the runway, the second two in the dirt on the edge of the runway. Right wing caught a bush and/or the ground on the third bounce and it did a flat cartwheel over some brush and came to rest. It could have been a lot worse. I ran over to see if they were ok. Luckily they were fine. Just bent metal and ego. Unfortunately I had first hand advice to give him on what he needed to do next.

Anyway, a great little get away. Lots to do and explore down there. I can't wait to spend some more time down there.

Dinner at the nice facilities at Escalante.

Sadie wasn't really thrilled about doing the hike to start with, and was really less thrilled after reading this at the trailhead!

Re: Grassstrippilot's Flying Adventures

That looks like a great hike. Is there a courtesy car at the airport that you used to get there?

Grassstrippilot's Flying Adventures

There is. Sphere One FBO out of Cedar City put one over there and fuel a few years back when Chris (slowhawk I think??) was there.

It looks like there is a lot of good hiking to be had there right off the highway...which is good because you wouldn't want to take the car off pavement. They don't want you too either.

We didn't do any hiking when we were ther last year. I think I need to get back for a quick weekend. What trail did you hike?
