Kevin,

Take a look at Blue Wing dry lake, just east of Pyramid lake. Almost no chance of vehicle traffic compared to Black Rock and still big enough to handle most any crowd. Also closer to Tahoe and the Carson Valley than BR. Here's a picture:

They say great minds think a like...that's the exact lake bed I think of if we ever moved! May use it next year!

Side note, saw one of your buddies in minden yesterday. He used to fly a husky. Had a carb ice issue a few years back when we were all flying together. Looking forward to seeing you.

I'm all for the new lake bed If we do move. 3SGS was trashed when we went yesterday. Maybe we should have a work party before the fly in to clean it up a bit.

I believe this is the coords for that lake! N40°22.65' W119°5.43' West of the 6617ft Peak

I looked at it and that thing is way out there! I think we have plenty of room left at 3SGS still so we should just stay there! Lots of nearby fun stuff too!

Hi folks, new to the group but hoping to make the fly-in. Been grounded for a couple of years until I could put a new engine on my airplane, but happy to be flying again.

Re: 5th Annual High SIerra Fly-in Oct 10-12, 2014

I flew out to 3SGS this morning. A beautiful day in the E. Sierras. I left Minden late morning, the DA was approx 6,000 ft and only a slight breeze from the east. For those of you thinking of coming to the fly-in but have some concerns I thought I would post my experience with the 172. My plane was empty except me and fairly full fuel tanks. I estimated my take off roll at about 800 to 900 ft. When you look at pictures down the runway to the east, it appears that you take off and need to climb immediately over a hill but that is not the case. If you make a slight turn to the right around the hill there is a dirt road that comes up the canyon to the the lake bed. I use the technique taught by Jim Dulin (contactflying). I take off and stay in ground effect over the lake bed. Once the plane is flying in ground effect I make a slight right turn around the hill and follow the road through the canyon down to the valley floor. I doubt I even climb 30 ft. when you come out in the valley you are probably 300 ft off the ground. I point the nose down, gain airspeed through the canyon and over the valley floor so I have plenty of lift. Also, usually as you come out over the valley there are thermals (depending on the wind of course) that provide more lift. Below are a few pictures from today. Not the best quality but all I had was my cell phone.

This is a photo down the runway (looking east). At the end of the runway (center of the picture) is a hill but just to the right is where the road comes up to the lake bed. A slight right turn, a slight left turn and follow the road down to the valley.

The surafce is as hard as asphalt. Hardly any dust on the plane!

A shot looking north. I beleive this is where everyone will be parking.

What's the empty weight on that 172 and how many ponies under the cowl?

Empty weight is 1580. HP is 200. I have also flown into the lake bed (and out) with a 160 hp 172. October should be a little cooler - especially in the AM.

I think that last shot is facing southeast-ish, not north.

Re: High SIerra Fly-in Oct 10-12, 2014 **KCXP FUEL DISCOUNT!

Just a heads up for all those that are arriving...

We have a substantial fuel discount for the entire weekend at Carson airport (KCXP). Pump meters will be adjusted Thursday afternoon for us!

Boy this thread slipped off on to page 6. Bump. I'm hoping, Kevin, that we'll be driving in with an RV.

Re: High SIerra Fly-in Oct 10-12, 2014 **KCXP FUEL DISCOUNT!

Getting close and I'm am getting anxious!

Won't be long now...please go the event area and let us know your coming. Obviously weather is the all mighty scenario for all of us but betting its perfect for us...I hope

The big fire should be all gone by then as well giving us our blue skies back...I hope

I will be out at 3sgs on the 9th.

Remember to bring your water as this is a camping event. Toilets will be on hand again and the BBQ is set for Saturday night and breakfast on Sunday morning.

Your going to want a pumpkin or two as well...
