Re: HSF - Oct 10-12, 2014 **KCXP FUEL DISCOUNT! UPDATED 9/30

Well, my BCP Friends,

I have been looking forward to sharing the time and flying with you all at the High Sierra Fly-In, but I have been called to a need over the same time.

The east coast of Baja, MX was severely ravaged by Hurricane Odile, and I have been asked to support a "relief supplies effort" with my aviation services, by the medical mission organization I pilot for. I'll also be stopping in at Punta San Francisquito, checking to see if my little improvements there are restore-able, salvage-able or even still there. The little information I have been able to get, is that the structures at the Punta San Francisquito "resort" were demolished by the storm.

So..... you all fly safe, have fun, and I wish beautiful weather for the event weekend!!

Kevin, I love the T-shirt, but more than anything....I honor the Memory of Robert E. Quinn. You know he'll be there in spirit, as will I.

Look forward to crossing paths in the dirt, on the ice, or at the hangar.......

What are you guys using for stakes for tie downs? Fly ties, rebar, ? If rebar, what lengths?

Thanks.

I honestly didn't see a lot tied down last year! I think the best bet is to jump up and hold the wings!

I had a successful test flight after a pretty major mod to my experimental today... I'll be there as barring some crazy weather for the crossing.

Anyone interested in a how-to on importing those waypoints into your Garmin GPS or Foreflight? It's not hard but it's not trivial either.

Also, we started a knowledge base page on the Northern Nevada area focused currently on the High Sierra fly-in vicinity. It has most of the airstrips listed, though it could use a little editing.

https://www.backcountrypilot.org/knowle ... ern-nevada

If you're headed out there and you need this info, it'll be linked from the main homepage article.

Sure now you offer...after I've plugged them in! :D

Actually, it was good to study the areas and get a feel for where they all are.

Yes. I posted earlier but I think not directed to this subject. The coordinates I took off the flyer take me far north of 3SGS. Garmin format is
hdd.dddd I entered N39.85227/W119.171645. I also entered N39.1477/W119.2802 which appears to be 3SGS. HELP

I am hoping good weather too, but those dunes got there somehow. A light cub and high desert winds = good tie downs.

So.....

I will have a 3 extra sets of fly ties if some of you want a set. PM me before Tues and I will pick up more if needed. They are $100 per set and contain 3 tie downs, line and carry bag.

I'm bringing Fly Ties. They worked well at the last dry lakebed I camped in.

Re: HSF - Oct 10-12, 2014 **KCXP FUEL DISCOUNT! UPDATED 9/30

Went out this am on a clean up / scouting trip for the various landings we have. The rain did us VERY GOOD! No dust...but we still have a week to go! The playa was hard as a rock. I will be honest, at first sight I thought...Uh oohh... seeing a lake in the very center and some dark spots is not comforting. After landing that quickly went away with how good a shape the lake bed is in! Seriously. Its in really great shape!!!

I have never seen a "lake" at 3SGS but I am betting its gone in the next few days. You can see in the photo here the mini lake and some standing water. Again, not to worry the runway will be marked with cones and any soft places (I did not find any soft spots, even in the water area) but again all will be marked.

I went in heavy on fuel and 4 pax. I used about 700' give or take and then taxied long to see the dark dirt and asses. All was good! My tracks in this photo are the runway. Check it out and know it...You can also see the small lake in the middle. Its going to make for cool photos if its still there by next weekend.
Image

This is a fly bye shot down the runway and you will see the standing water on the road that is really on your left as you land. Again no issues at all. The dark dirt was actually dry and hard.
Image

The mini lake made for some cool photos...I walked across it and it was hard under the inch standing water.
Image

Anyhow, the forecast for the entire western US looks outstanding for us! I have looked from Bozeman, Salt lake, Seattle and Reno and we are going to get it! Yeah we are still 6-7 days out but its looking very good!

Remember to use the freq we have published and use your eyes! The Lat/ Long coords are correct here. I tested them this AM.
Image

You are on your own Thursday and Friday for food but again Saturday night we have a catered FREE BBQ and Sunday mornings breakfast is also FREE...

Bring your pumpkins, your smile and your family. I'm bringing mine!

Lastly, if you have not already seen this, make sure to have a look and familuerize yourself with the various places we like to fly. Thanks for putting this up Zane!

Looking forward to seeing you!

Woohoo just printed everything out. Looking forward to finally making this one. I talked my wife into having our daughters 5th birthday party this weekend so I could go! Still looking for anyone leaving from the Sac Valley Friday morning to make the crossing with. Looking to wheels up pretty early on Friday from Nut Tree KVCB.
