Where did you fly today?

Did you fly somewhere cool, take photos, and feel like telling the tale to make us drool from the confines of our offices? Post them up!

Yeah, That's Indian Lake for anyone familiar with the area. In fact last week I was flying around and didn't land on a couple of lakes because there were too many snowmobiles cruising around. It's been a funky snow year. Late freeze up, great conditions on the lakes for a while then we had a wet snowstorm that left a slush layer on most of the lakes with a dry insulating storm on top, so that slush layer never froze. We have been limited to landing on lakes with a lot of ice fishing or snowmobile traffic. Still fun for sure, but the less traveled lakes and ponds are more fun. Lately we had a quick warm up with cold temps that have left a bunch of the lakes pretty much glare ice other than where the snowmobiles packed it down earlier.

Pete

This is Schroon Lake a few weeks ago, everything out of the snowmobile highway was 3" 5" of slush .It may not look like it, but those tracks were plenty wide enough to land on.

Kind of a crappy photo, but this is the same lake Sunday.

Re: Where did you fly today?

Pretty tough to follow those spectacular Alaska ski flying shots! So just a bit more mundane every day kind of post. Ski (the kind you bind to your feet) season is winding down. Yesterday I took advantage of the nice weather and the pre-sheep season to land in my front yard.

Re: Where did you fly today?

I'm loath to drive into town on a weekend, so rather than do that, I flew 22 miles down range to a small town with the airstrip only 1 miles from a great old school type farm & ranch supply store. I took the e Montague and the Travoy folding trailer, and 5 minutes after landing I was riding off. I picked up a 40 pound of fertilizer and some (2 gallons) of 1 year soil sterilizer (for two separate projects), and couldn't even tell the load was there. Image

Re: Where did you fly today?

Another short weekend flight to get some lags bolts for a cross buck fence project (1/4 mile worth) I started a couple days ago. 24 lag screws, 3/8" by 5" was all I needed, but they would allow me to get enough done to accurately determine the remainder of the needed logs and other stuff, so that I could get my order in first thing Monday.

This time to Soda Springs, where they have a great ranch supply store, (if they don't have it, you don't need it) that opens on Sundays at 9. Just 30 miles, but over the 9K range behind me, so a much longer drive. The unattended field has a old school loaner car, keys in the visor, and the strip is just 1/2 mile from town proper. It has somehow slipped thru the security fencing mania, it's wide open, like the good old days. I hope someone from Homeland Security doesn't read this. I also checked on a upcoming crane job just a 1/2 mile out of my way, that was handy, anything to avoid driving into town on a weekend. Town, that'd be Pocatello, ruins my weekend mood, a short flight to one of the smaller burgs supplies the needed items while keeping the weekend vibe intact =D> My other potential choice for the parts run was the same chain that now has an outlet in Afton, and the front door is about a 200 yard walk from where I park the plane, and just down the street from the cafe, but the weather didn't look good that way.Image
