Yeah he is. He's big enough now that next time I'll put a pad under him and I think he will be able to see over the dash. It's going by way too fast for sure!

Re: Grassstrippilot's Flying Adventures

One last overnight before school starts tomorrow. Yesterday we headed up to Heiner's for a camp out. We landed right before sunset. It got cold quick! We ate our dinner, got the tent set up, and watched a movie before going to sleep. It got down into the upper 30s and the Mr. Heater got exercised. The next morning we ate breakfast while finishing out movie, then took our time packing up. We had a nice visit with Gaylon and checked out his new 182RG. We also checked out his modified Razor with a 300hp turbo Yamaha engine. It sounds so cool...and mean!

After a little frisbee on the runway, we took off to Soda Springs, grabbed some lunch, stopped in Bancroft, and then headed to Preston for fuel. We saw a fire just starting northwest of there and it got big quickly. We also flew by a big fire burning west of Bear Lake the day before. It was still rolling today.

It was just what I needed. A great mini-adventure with my buddy.

I guess this last Sunday a car lost control and went from the highway and through this hangar. Amazingly the ultralight didn't have a scratch. The car went through one wall and out the other.

Grassstrippilot's Flying Adventures

Sigh...last adventure of the summer. We were supposed to head to Idaho two weeks ago but postponed it so we could attend another family function. Well, the weather turned colder, but we still had a great time. Winds were forecasted to be howling at ridge top level but we had a smooth ride up high. Showers were just moving in right before we got to Galena and we made it in just in time. My dad was there waiting for us in his camper. We spent two nights at the Smiley Creek Lodge. Originally we were supposed to be in the tepee but were able to swap into a yurt, which was a good thing because it got down into the high 20s! We hiked, fished, and ate well. A great end to the summer.

On our way.

Re: Grassstrippilot's Flying Adventures

Next time you are in Star Valley at Heiner's, let me know. I have a home on the other side of the valley just northwest from there. Grew up there and fly on Gaylon's strip all the time. I'm up here most of the summer.

Hey, that would be great to meet up! I'll do that. We get up there a few times each year.

Re: Grassstrippilot's Flying Adventures

Thursday I did an O-dark-thirty departure to meet a friend, his dad, and his uncle at Picabo. The plane was to fly to Smiley Creek for breakfast, but the Stanley basin was socked in, so after a scenic flight over the Sawtooths, we returned to Picabo for breakfast. Even without getting to Smiley Creek, still a great morning of flying!

Nice pictures. It's been awhile but I've seen that socked in view a couple of times out there too. Wish I'd have taken more pictures.

Re: Grassstrippilot's Flying Adventures

When I grow up, or win the lottery, I want a C205...looks awesome.

By the time that could happen...my kids will be gone and the PA-22 will haul my wife and I just fine though...so I guess I will stick with the minimum of what I can't afford!

Re: Grassstrippilot's Flying Adventures

Yeah it was socked in with a thick layer. I wish I had thought to check the webcam to see how long it took to burn off.

Hehe Troy. Good thing is it's actually a fairly affordable plane...compared to the likes of a 206 or 185 anyway. Still a lot of bang for the buck. Most I see run between $40-70K. Not pocket change but definitely a lot of performance for the price. Finished the annual today. Started it yesterday. Granted we did some work like replacing the spark plugs and we did the tires a couple months ago, but still, a $400 annual. I'll take it!

Re: Grassstrippilot's Flying Adventures

What kind of speed and fuel burn you get with that 205? Is that an IO-470 or 520?

This one has an IO-520, but my previous one had the IO-470. Speeds have been almost the same. 150 mph ROP, 130 mph LOP with the 470. Slightly faster with the 520. The burn with the 470 ROP was around 11.5, LOP 9.5-10.0. I don't have Gamis on the 520 yet and have been running near peak below 65% BHP, sometimes slightly LOP, and it's happy at 10.5 gph. Lower altitudes and/or above 65% BHP and it's in the 11.5-12.5 gph range. All at 2300 rpm. I'm finally ready to get it equipped for LOP and, out of curiosity the other day, I did a Gami lean test and my current Gami spread is at 0.9 gph, so there is definitely room for improvement. It ran ok up to 30 degrees LOP at 9.5 gph at 11,500', but not as smooth as it could be. Gamis will fix that. Cylinder temps ran from 303 to 372.

Re: Grassstrippilot's Flying Adventures

How about takeoff and landing distance? Is it similar to a 182?

Grassstrippilot's Flying Adventures

Heavy...as in at gross...1,500'. With a normal load I'm comfortable with 1,200'. Medium to light load, well under 1,000'. Full fuel, 2 adults, and a couple hundred pounds of gear is around 500-600'. A friend has a Sportsman STOL on his and he says he's seeing 300' takeoff and landings. I will note that until I got VGs on it I wasn't seeing those distances for landings.

Yep...I know they are 'relatively' affordable...costing only 3 to 5 times what I spent on my plane...which is not affordable for me! But what a great family hauler. Would love it.
