One of the cooler places I take people, inside a volcano’s crater lake. Animal trails along the rim of the caldera make for great hiking once you climb the wall.

It’s in Katmai but not the Mt Katmai Crater Lake I assume you’re referring to. I don’t have the balls to take a normally aspirated plane full of people to the Katmai crater haha. Have seen plenty of Beavers up there though.

Does this volcano have a name or is it a secret spot?

What floats are those, and do you like them? Browsing floats for my M6/7 project.

They are edo 2440’s. I love them but I don’t have a lot to compare them too so I might not be the best to ask. But they float a ton, get on step quick and seem to handle rough waves and a rougher pilot quite well

I love Alaska and I love floatplanes. Group of kayakers got this shot of me coming off the step to pick them up.

The EDO 2440s are indeed great floats on a Maule. I flew them on a couple of different Maules. The Baumann floats were also great, but only a few sets were built before Baumann went out of business.

Great pic Asa!

Pinecone, probably flew right over and didn't stop in for a visit? Haha. I need to dig you a float pond. Great pics, looks like a good time.

They're also awesome on a Stinson 108. I've got a couple sets of busted ones here in the lineup to get rebuilt....one set with probably 25 hours total time before they got busted.

Re: Photo Thread: Float Flying

It crossed my mind as I flew north but I was anxious to get to the cabin. I was a couple weeks late getting there this year. I usually stop in Fairview for fuel. I made a comment that prompted them to buy a big ladder. Now I feel an obligation!

Re: Photo Thread: Float Flying

Made it to Oshkosh! Sunday, landed at the seaplane base. Started heading for the Fisk arrival, we were directed to start at endevor by atis, Someone had a gear problem on the runway and holds, holds, STAY Outside of Endevor! We were like lets just go to the seaplane base! That makes it easy! Stayed overnight in tent camping. Monday morning moved over to KOSH ( Once again, Big Easy!) and parked in Amphib Seaplane Camping. The mosquitos were better at the SPB. My buddy in the tent got wet! I was dry sleeping on my cot in the plane. As the judges came by we looked like white trash with everything drying on wires etc. Got out Wednesday before the storm.

Henny, is it a little bit smokey there or just haze. I don't think there have been many fires in your neck of the woods this summer has there?

Re: Photo Thread: Float Flying

Rule number 3 of float flying - don't end up as a sling load. I think this was the Branch River Air C206 that wrecked last week. Can happen to anyone. (https://www.alaskasnewssource.com/2021/ ... cials-say/)

Stop to fish at Grosvenor Lake in Katmai. Vegetation reminds me of Mississippi or Louisiana for some reason. Maybe because the whole place was flooded out, basically a bayou.

My fave spot in Katmai, this time with another plane.

Lunch stop at an unnamed lake that has fossils in the rocks. Limited tie down options so the 180 is tied to he 206 which is tied to a tree.

Actually, it has been a pretty active fire season here compared to the recent past. Lots of small fires in northern Minnesota, but some bigger ones in Ontario which have been giving us a lot of smoke down here. There are currently 7 fires burning just north of the border in Quetico Provincial Park, 3 of which have the potential to jump into the Boundary Waters Wilderness Area.
