Re: Photo Thread: Float Flying

Gosh, I can't believe I missed this thread back in 2014 when it started, especially since I got my SES that summer. Here's me just after passing my checkride, July 14, 2014, with the hotrod 172 that I trained in, a 172E with Avcon conversion 180hp Lycoming, CS prop, etc. It was so much like my P172D with the same conversion that there was no learning curve with the airplane, just learning floats instead of wheels. Truly the most fun I've ever had in an airplane. Lake Union, Seattle--where the biggest problem was avoiding chopping up the dummies on paddle boards and in little sail boats who seemed to think it was fun to cut in front of that 75" swinging scimitar on the nose of the airplane.

I took a camping trip with my boys down the Mississippi River with my boys and brought the GoPro but due to my lack of recording skills the only thing that turned out is the initial take off and last landing. The take off was with a full load of camping gear, people, and gas from a 3,000 ft lake.

That was great, Heath! I can't wait.

Is your instrument panel squared off? Or is it the stock curve?

Very cool! Thanks!

Several things I noticed, that reminded me of little details I haven't thought about for the last 3 years: everything that has to be done while taxiing (run up, setting instruments, etc.), the joy I remember every time the airplane settled into the water after landing, water rudders down as soon as the airplane settled into the water, headsets off while taxiing, gliding into the dock after killing the engine--all really neat things that are different from land plane ops.

Re: Photo Thread: Float Flying

Thanks for fixing my video Zane, the instrument panel is flat on the top and rounded on the corners. There's not a whole lot of space for instruments but It gives great visibility.

This is a first for our family owning a floatplane. The 185 gem has 187 TT on it and has the original engine. As I write this it is being fitted with a 550 and a new buccaneer prop. She should be a real performer and cannot wait to take it in the water.

Thanks to those who upload photos for enjoyment by the group. I'll try to reciprocate.

A trip to SE Yukon last week: tailed up at the cabin.
Image
One of three cow moose we saw along various parts of the shore while trolling.
Image
The only bull we saw, but a nice one! Note the velvet sloughing.
Image
Many 20-24" lake trout. This one has the bull in the backdrop.
Image
Biggest fish I ever caught. 40" plus! Estimated 20 lb. Northern Pike.
